Monster • My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (2010)
Monsterの歌詞
- Bitch I’m a monster no good blood sucker
fat ...:
“Fat motherf**ker” means he’s eating as in making money and being successful as a rapper. Rick Ross is also a hefty guy himself, who weighed around 350 pounds at the time of this song’s release. Since then, he lost over 100 pounds due to his self-branded exercise program.
- as you run through my jungle all you hear is ...:
Rumble in the Jungle was the famous 1974 boxing match between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman in Kinshasa, Zaire (now Democratic Republic of the Congo).
Rozay owns the rap game (it’s his jungle) and will knock out anyone who tries to run through it. Rick Ross was featured on The Game’s “Ali Bomaye,” where the 1974 fight was also used as a metaphor for the rap arena.
- Kanye West sample, here’s one for example:
Early Kanye production was very sample-heavy. He often used sped-up, chipmunk-sounding samples like the Luther Vandross' “A House Is Not A Home" on Twista’s “Slow Jamz.”
Ironically, “Monster” happens to be one of only two songs on My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy that contains no credited samples or elements of other songs (“All of the Lights” is the other).
- do the rap and the track triple double no assist:
In basketball, a triple double refers to achieving double digit numbers in three of the following categories: scoring, rebounds, blocked shots, steals, and assists.
Kanye writes, raps, and produces his own tracks. Whereas typically a hip hop artist either produces records or raps, Ye doesn’t need assistance since he can take a track from concept to completion by himself (doing both the rapping and producing).
This seems somewhat hypocritical, considering 26 writers and 12 producers worked on this album.
- I heard the people saying raps are gettin trap ...:
This is a callback to 808s & Heartbreak and Kanye’s influence on the rap game.
Rappers using auto-tune/opening up emotionally became popular post-808s. The likes of Drake, Childish Gambino, J. Cole and more were all influenced by Kanye.
- none of you niggas know where the swamp is:
The line refers to the idea that other rappers and listeners may claim to have an idea of his upbringing/the ghetto, but don’t actually have any connection to what he has experienced
- Pull up in the monster
automobile gangster:
Nicki starts off her verse by exploiting the first of three different meanings of “monster.” In this case, “monster” means big. Furthermore, Nicki is starting up her verse like dramatically arriving on the scene in a car.
- with a bad bitch that came from Sri Lanka:
Nicki’s friend M.I.A. was born in London to Sri Lankan parents and moved to Sri Lanka when she was six months old. Nicki is also featured on M.I.A.’s “Teqkilla.” She and Nicki are known for collaborating and shouting each other out in interviews.
- yeah I’m in that Tonka:
Tonka is a company that makes toy trucks, usually yellow in color. This plays off of her opening line as Tonka trucks are literal automobiles, while the “monster” Nicki is in is a killer song.
- Willy Wonka:
Willy Wonka is the candy mogul from the children’s book Charlie and The Chocolate Factory.
- bought the chain that always give me back pain:
Kanye is parodying/living up to the common hip hop trope of buying a large chain. His massive 24K Horus head chain allegedly cost him $300,000. Certainly looks like it would cause back pain…
Kanye later released a song called “Chain Heavy.”
- head of the class and she just want a swallowship:
Since she’s the “head” (top) of the class, she just won a “swallowship” (swallow+ scholarship) to help pay her ‘education.’ Also, “head” is a term for oral sex.
- I kill a block I murder avenues:
Muhammad Ali’s speech before his fight with George Foreman, the “Rumble in the Jungle,” he said that he’s going to “[beat] the big bad monster, who knocks out everybody, and no one can whoop him.” Later he goes on to say, “I murdered a rock, injured a stone, hospitalized a brick; I’m so mean, I make medicine sick.” The syntax of “I kill the block, I murder the avenues,” seems to suggest Jay-Z may be referencing Ali’s legendary pre-match speech.
- everybody wanna know what my Achilles' heel ...:
The Achilles heel (a phrase of Greek origin) is a deadly weakness that could actually or potentially lead to a downfall. Jay’s killing everyone with his monstrous lyrics, so his enemies need to find his Achilles heel to take him down.
According to Homer’s The Iliad, Achilles was known as one of the greatest warriors who ever lived. Jay is most likely alluding once again to his own greatness, as well as admitting that, yes he does have a weakness, love. He may be a monster, but he is still mortal.
- monster Giuseppe heel:
Giuseppe Zanotti is a high-end shoe designer and is one of her favourite brands.
- and I’m all up all up all up in the bank with the ...:
Nicki is known for the funny faces she makes in music videos. She is also referring to laughing all the way to the bank, a common idiom that depicts one’s joy in making a (perhaps unlikely) profit. The phrase is a variant of “cry all the way to the bank”, suggesting the money was wrongly earned.
- Tony Matterhorn dutty wine it:
Tony Matterhorn is a Jamaican dancehall reggae DJ who gained popularity in the U.S. with his song “Dutty Wine” (2006). Nicki is aiming for the unexpected crossover success that Matterhorn had.
- but really really I don’t give a F-U-C-K
forget ...:
Nicki takes on the voice of her critics in these two lines. They complain about her fake character, claiming she puts on this face for her fans but in reality is like a diet cheater, stuffing cheesecake into her pants.
There is a double meaning here as cheese is another term for money. Her pockets are fat (rich) while she remains skinny and successful, like Barbie.
- and I’ll say Bride of Chucky is child’s play
just ...:
Chucky is the murderous doll who first made an appearance in the film titled Child’s Play (1988). In the fourth film of the series, Jennifer Tilly voiced a vengeful female serial killer spirit inside Chucky’s female counterpart, Bride of Chucky (1998).
Nicki often portrays herself as a (Barbie) doll, and in Child’s Play, it is the doll that is the killer monster. Nicki is used to killing others' careers just as Chucky went on a killing spree in his films.
- I think me, you and Am should menage Friday:
“Am” was Kanye’s girlfriend at the time, model Amber Rose. Their breakup came a few months before the song’s release.
The line also references Nicki’s stage name Minaj, which is a play on the phrase “ménage à trois” (a threesome), and her album Pink Friday.
