The Wild Gazelle

O wild gazelle, where can I find you?1
We have lots in common, me and you!

We are both alone, wanderers, we both have no one
In behind and before, beasts and traps ambush [begun]

Let’s ask each other, "how do you feel?"
Grant each other's wishes, if we can deal

Alas! As far as I can see, this troubled meadow
Has no place to graze2happily, free from sorrow

O friends! Let me know who [on earth] will be the one
to help outcasts, to company the ones having no one

May green feet3Khizr4come [strolling]
And his mighty will get things rolling

As that fleeting tall as cedar [beauty] did get going
Let’s shelter [from longing] by the cedar tree’s twig

Let's sit by a spring fountain, next to a brook
Let’s have moist in eyes, to myself let me talk

Let’s recall memories of the bygone5, of the friendlier
And the spring cloud will accompany us in tear6

As the running wailing water gets close by
Give it help by the [running] water of your eye

She didn’t get along with me, that old fond friend!
[Help,] O people of faith7! Help! For the love of God!

No one but the green feet Khizr can be the one
To unite this lonely one with the other lonely one

  • 1. The original lyrics are part of a fairly long poem by Hafez, the Persian poet
  • 2. eat grass in a field not touching
  • 3. Lit. happy/auspicious feet. In Islamic narrative, the miracle of Khizr, was that if he did sit on a dry land, grasses, etc. would appear on the ground beneath him and that land would have become green. The name of the prophet means "green" in Arabic. See here
  • 4. Khidr (Arabic: ٱلْخَضِر‎, romanized: al-Khaḍir), also transcribed as al-Khadir, Khader, Khizr, al-Khidr, Khazer, Khadr, Khedher, Khizir, Khizar, is a figure described but not mentioned by name in the Quran as a righteous servant of God possessing great wisdom or mystic knowledge. In some narratives, he has found the fountain of youth and become immortal.
  • 5. people, not things, gone
  • 6. i.e. rains
  • 7. Lit. Muslims
