The Erlking

Who rides through the night, through wind so wild?
The loving father enfolds his child!
He bears the boy secure in his arm,
He keeps him cosy and safe from harm.

‘My son, why tremble and cover your eyes!’
‘O father, look, he has no disguise:
He’s there! The Erlking -- his crown and tail!’
‘My son, it’s only mist and hail’.

‘My darling boy, come, let’s away!
Such lovely games we’ll play every day;
Such pretty blossoms to pluck and hold,
And my mother shines in raiment of gold’.

‘O father, my father, and did you not hear
Those words the Erlking has breathed in my ear?’
‘Stay calm, child, and forget your unease:
It’s just the wind that blows through the trees’.

‘You lovely child, will you come with me?
For my daughters wait there, as you shall see;
And my daughters fashion a world of delight,
With dances and lullabies all through the night’.

‘O father, my father! But do you not see:
Daughters of Erlking have come for me?’
‘My son, my son, it’s not what it seems,
For there in the murk the willow-tree gleams’.

‘You ravish me, your form is exquisite to see;
And if you’re not willing, by force it shall be’.
‘O father, my father, he’s coming again!
Erlking has seized me and I’m in pain!’

The father shudders, his riding’s now wild;
He holds to his body the whimpering child;
But reaching home with toil and dread
The father found that his child was dead.
