I Like It Like That

There's no secret to drawing me out
I'm real easy to access
Too much agony makes me bitter
I just like having a good time
When the walls close in and the air weighs down heavy,
I can hardly catch my breath

Not enough money, too many things and people I miss1
Everything else starts to fall out of place
I don't like it when it's cold
So rain and cold together, don't even get me started
Life outside the lines is more fun
But you gotta be careful if you don't want to take a spill2

Getting pulled over, I don't like that3
Bureaucracy, that's not for me
The Gulf War, not a fan
Empty plates, no no no4
Sunset on the beach, chilly beer in my hand
The kids playing in the garden
Chubby-cheeked angels in the sky
Your eyes on me5
I told you, that's how I like it

Bald-faced lies, I'll pass on those
Getting decked in the face, not my thing
Airheaded conversation, I'm not here for it
A poke in the eyes, nah, no thank you
Mambo on the record player
Ham on the smoker6
Sex and sleeping all snug and spooned together
Tossing chit-chat aside
Orchids in bloom7
I told you already, I like it like that

  • 1. Literally it says "Nostalgia/reminiscence kills, money is lacking".
  • 2. I was a little loose on the wheel throughout this entire translation because it's very very slangy. 'Espanar' generally means 'to dust, to clean up', but here I'm going with a more appropriate, informal interpretation of it.
  • 3. Two big notes here. One, I couldn't find a clear translation of 'marginal parada', so I just went for it on my own. 'Marginal' = side, margin, and 'parada' = stop. Native speakers, let me know if I'm right or not! 2. So "não gosto" just means "I don't like [it]", but I was not about to let the clunky, repetitive English translation of that phrase ruin the fun and breezy mood of this song. So instead, I translated "não gosto" each time as a different informal English phrase for 'I don't like it'.
  • 4. Really it says "empty pan" (panela vazia), but that doesn't quite make sense to English ears, so I went with 'plates'. It's the same idea in the end.
  • 5. 'Seu zóinho' is just a slang spelling of 'seus olhinhos', 'your [little] eyes'. In Brazil people also sometimes say 'zóio' in place of 'seus olhos'. Isn't that the most fun thing?? I love it.
  • 6. Going out on a limb again with this one. 'Tabaco' is 'tobacco', and looking up 'paia', what I found was a type of food, apparently originally a Portuguese thing, that's basically just a type of smoked ham. So I may be entirely wrong, but I just leaped from one to the other and decided this line was taking about smoking ham. Again if I am wrong please let me know!
  • 7. 'Chachim' is an alternate spelling of 'xaxim', which refers to plants with fibrous stems (as opposed to woody stems). So the speaker here is talking about having orchids among her forbs/flowering plants-- I didn't go with 'garden' because she could be talking about potted plants, too.
