The Truth*

With the cigarette butt of life pressed between the lips,
A murky and cold look, a little slow to walk,
He turned the corner of the neighborhood, drunk now with memories,
Like pouring out a poison, he was heard singing.
The old street in my neighborhood where I took the first step,
I return to you the deck of cards bent by hard shuffling,
With a dagger in my chest, with my dream shattered,
It was shattered in an embrace that would give you the truth.

I learned everything good, I learned everything bad,
I know about the kiss that is bought, I know about the kiss that is given;
About the friend who is a friend as long as it suits him,
And I know that with a lot of money one is worth much more.
I learned that in this life, one must cry if others cry
And, if the street musicians laugh, one must laugh;
To not think or be mistaken...for what, if it's all the same!
And besides, you run the risk that they christen you Dimwit!

The time that I wanted to be good, they laughed in my face;
When I called out an injustice, the force made me shut up;
The experience was my lover; the disappointment, my friend...
Every card has a contra, and every contra is a given!
Today I don't even believe in myself. Everything is a trick, everything is false,
And that one, the one who is at the top, is the same as the rest...
So, you shouldn't be surprised if, some night, drunk,
You will see me go arm-in-arm with someone I should not go with.

I learned everything good, I learned everything bad,
I know about the kiss that is bought, I know about the kiss that is given;
About the friend who is a friend as long as it suits him,
And I know that with a lot of money one is worth much more.
I learned that in this life, one must cry if others cry
And, if the street musicians laugh, one must laugh;
To not think or be mistaken...for what, if it's all the same!
And besides, you run the risk that they christen you Dimwit!

*There is a Spanish idiom "cantarle las cuarenta" which means you give someone a piece of your mind, or tell them the truth about what you think of them. I'm guessing that's what this song is about, telling the truth about life. The literal translation is "The Forty".
