万葉集梅花の歌三十二首并せて序

太宰帥大伴の卿の宅に宴してよめる梅の花の歌三十二首、また序

天平二年正月十三日（西暦７３０年２月８日）に、太宰府の長官の大伴旅人の家に集まり、梅花の宴を開く。季節は、初春のよい月で、大気もよく風も穏やかになり、梅の花は鏡の前（に座る美女たちが化粧に使う）白い粉のように（白く）開き、蘭は（身にまとう）装飾品の香りのように薫っている。

　それだけでなく、夜がほのぼのと明けようとする頃の山頂に雲がかかり、松は薄く織った絹（のような雲）をかぶり傘を傾け（ているように見え）、夕刻の山の峰（または洞穴）に霧が生じ、鳥は（その）薄く織った絹（のような霧）に閉じ込められて林の中で迷っている。庭には今年の蝶が舞い、空には去年飛来してきた雁が（北へと）帰る。

　さてそこで空を覆いとし大地を敷物として、膝を近づけて盃を飛ばす（かのように掲げる）。（楽しさのあまり）一堂に会したこの部屋の中では言葉を忘れるほどで、襟を煙霞（のかかった美しい景色）に開いて打ち解ける。物事にこだわらずさっぱりとして自らの心のおもむくままにふるまい、気分良く満ち足りている。

（心情を述べるすべが）詩歌ではないのであれば、どうしてこの心情を述べることができようか。漢詩に落梅の編が書き記してある。（その漢詩が作られた）昔と今とで何が違うのだろうか。園の梅を題材としてちと短歌を作ろうではありませんか。

The Foreword to the Thirty-Two Plum Blossom Poems

The 32 plum blossom poems composed at the residence of Dazai Governor Otomo Tabito and the foreword thereto

On January 13, Tenpyo 2, we gathered at the elderly governor's to hold a party. Because it happened to be a nice month in early spring, the air was fresh and the wind gentle; the plum blossoms were as white as a powdered beauty before the mirror, and the boneset flowers as fragrant as an adorned nobleman just passing by.

Furthermore, at dawn clouds covered the mountaintops so that the pine trees looked as if dressed in silks under umbrellas, and at dusk mist came out from the hillside cave so that birds were caged in the shrouded woods. There were newborn butterflies dancing around the garden and wild geese flying in the sky to migrate.

We drank together sitting knee to knee on the rug of the earth under the roof of the heavens. Speechless in such a room, we loosed our collars comfortably while viewing the hazy world outside. Free from obsession and hesitancy, feeling relaxed and contented.

Other than through poetry, how could we fully express our feelings? We know some ancient Chinese poems about falling plum blossoms. Is there any difference between now and then, here and there? We suggested we compose a few poems about the plum blossoms in the garden.
