Taxi Man

The clock strikes midnight,
the barrel house closed down,
and I'm really pretty drunk,
I had a row with Katrin.
I wave a taxi over
and, slurring, tell him the address.
He looks at me appraisingly, the taxi man,
but then, then he drives off.

I want a cigarette,
if only I had one.
The taxi man, I bet you,
does not smoke, has none.
There is a fag-end in the ashtray,
drunk as I am, I light it,
deeply taking in the smoke, I am a little better,
and I begin to sing:

„Now come on, drive off, I wanna go home, taxi man (taxi man),
drive a little faster, and don't stop all the time!
Drive off right now, I wanna go home!“

He really did not like that,
he brakes hard, full of anger,
and says, „That's 5 Marks 65“
I pay the price, he taps his hat,
and I'm back on the road again.
On top of that, it's raining,
I'm toddeling through the puddles, feeling like Gene Kelly,1
I'm singing out aloud:

„Now come on, drive off, I wanna go home, taxi man! (Taxi man),
Drive a little faster, hey, and don't stop all the time! (Taxi man).
Taxi man, oh taxi man!“

Police station. I wish I had a beer,
the cop asks, „What, what were you thinking, good sir?“
I shrug my shoulders, stare at him,
just like a drunk can stare.
I start to sing my song again,
aloud as it can be:

„Now come on, drive off, I wanna go home, taxi man! (Taxi man),
Drive a little faster, hey, and don't stop all the time! (Taxi man).
Now come on, drive off, I wanna go home, taxi man! (Taxi man),
Drive a little faster, hey, and don't stop all the time! (Taxi man).
Taxi man, taxi man, taxi man...“

„Taxi man, taxi man, taxi man, taxi man...
Taxi ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-man...
Oh, oh, oh taxi man...“

5 Mark 65?

Your English is stellar, so I will most likely stand corrected and learn, but just in case.

slurping -> I'd expect "slurring"

mein Lieber -> I don't picture a cop using "dear" in that context :)
I've yet to spend a night in a UK or US slammer, so I can only guess, but maybe "good sir" or something?

OMG, Silenced! Of course you are perfectly right, "slurring" is the correct expression! I had a man in mind who was not able to control his salivary flow after too much alcohol! 😝
I also like your proposal, to let the police address him "good sir" instead of "dear", although, when I did the translation, "dear" felt like enough irony.
Thank you for your help!!
And don't you ever call my English "stellar" again, I don't feel like an A.L.F.! 😂😱
