A posy of violets

She was happy in her marriage,
even though her husband was a real demon.
Her man had a rather bad temper,
she used to complain that he was never tender.

For already over three years
she's been receiving letters from a stranger,
lyrical letters full of poetry,
that have brought her back the happiness.

Who is the one who writes to her poems? Tell me who!
Who was sending her flowers in the spring time?
Who every ninth of November,
always without any card,
was sending her a posy of violets?

Sometimes she dreams and tries to imagine
who could be the one who admires her so much.
Would it be a faithful man with grey hair,
sincere smile and tender hands?

She doesn't know who suffers in silence,
who could be her secret lover,
and she lives like that day by day
with the illusion of being loved.

Who is the one who writes to her poems? Tell me who!
Who was sending her flowers in the spring time?
Who every ninth of November,
always without any card,
was sending her a posy of violets?

And every afternoon when her husband returns home
tired of working, he looks at her with a crooked smile.
He doesn't say a word, because he knows everything,
he knows she's happy, even if this way only,
because he is the one who writes her poems,
he, her lover, her secret love.
And she, who doesn't know that,
looks at her husband and remains silent.

Who is the one who writes to her poems? Tell me who!
Who was sending her flowers in the spring time?
Who every ninth of November,
always without any card,
was sending her a posy of violets?

A small bouquet of violets would sound better than a nosegay.
Also: who could be the one who admires her so much (rather than esteems).

Thank you Marcos for your comment and welcome on LT! Regular smile

I'm not a native English speaker and sometimes I may not feel how my translations sound, so the opinion of a native speaker is very important for me.

I don't trust dictionaries blindly and when I'm not sure I use Google to check if the word or expression that I want to use is broadly used having the same meaning.

I knew that "un ramito de violetas" means "a little bouquet (or bunch) of violets", but for me it was too long. I wanted to have just one word, exactly like in Spanish.

"Nosegay" was a word that I found in some online dictionaries, but I have also read this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nosegay

This makes me wonder why you don't like it. I guess this words is probably a little archaic. Is it the case?

Do you have any suggestion how to translate "ramito" without using two words?

And as for "estimar": "to esteem" is the direct translation and it even sounds pretty close, this is why I have intentionally used it.
I wonder why do you prefer "admires her"?

A bunch of flowers, diminutives are hard to express in english, a nosegay is a special elaborate arrangement of flowers and not a ramito

Thank you Evan. I'm happy to see you back again Regular smile . I was already worried, 'cause you disappeared for a long while and later the same happened to me. I'm still a bit short of time, but I hope to be more often soon.

I have checked again and I wasn't able to find a clear answer what is the difference between nosegay and other forms of a bouquet, so I have used the safest suggestion that Marcos had advised.

Thank you Evan :). And what do you think about "posy"?

evfokasevfokas    月, 16/03/2015 - 19:10

I doubt if it would come to mind, but if it did I sure would. The most obvious ramito for me is lil'bouquet

AldefinaAldefina    月, 16/03/2015 - 20:08

So I think I'll use it, but I'll wait for Marcos' opinion.

I think nosegay is archaic - I've never heard anyone say it.
I can't think of a one word translation. -ito endings are very Spanish, in English you really have to say small or little.
Admires is better because of the romantic intention.

I forgot something that I wanted to write already at the beginning. This song is an interesting example a phenomenon called "laísmo". Here's an explanation:
http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/La%C3%ADsmo

I like this idea as it really makes sense, making life easer - specially for not native speakers, but not only.

I think RAE should introduce it as a rule.

In all the lyrics that you can find in Internet throughout the whole song it is always "le", but both Cecilia and Julio sing "la" instead - example: "la mandaba un ramito de violetas".
