翻訳

I stand at the head of the sortie

I stand at the head of the sortie, a tear welling up in my eye*
I stand at the head of the sortie, a tear welling up in my eye
Give me that magic in your eyes, that I may storm the castle tonight

I stand at the head of the sortie, a tear welling up in my eye
I stand at the head of the sortie, a tear welling up in my eye
Give me that magic in your eyes, that I may storm the castle tonight

How can I begin to describe your beauty, when before you, my tongue has been rendered mute
How can I begin to describe your beauty, when before you, my tongue has been rendered mute
On the beach, if your silhouette were to pass by, the waves of the Seven Seas would settle down
On the beach, if your silhouette were to pass by, the waves of the Seven Seas would settle down
Give me that magic in your eyes, that I may storm the castle tonight

I stand at the head of the sortie, a tear welling up in my eye
I stand at the head of the sortie, a tear welling up in my eye
Give me that magic in your eyes, that I may storm the castle tonight

O one from Baalbek, O swarthy one, O fair one, and first-rate one
O one from Baalbek, O swarthy one, O fair one, and first-rate one
You've inebriated the world with no wine, with this quantity that is like a candle**
You've inebriated the world with no wine, with this quantity that is like a candle**
Give me that magic in your eyes, that I may storm the castle tonight

I stand at the head of the sortie, a tear welling up in my eye
I stand at the head of the sortie, a tear welling up in my eye
Give me that magic in your eyes, that I may storm the castle tonight

(Ad-lib)
Lord, You have adorned the world with a sun and a moon, and from the same piece of clay, You've formed all human beings
Lord, You have adorned the world with a sun and a moon, and from the same piece of clay, You've formed all human beings
Why is it then that one can be fair, when the other isn't
Why is it then that one can be fair, when the other isn't
And the one who isn't would not have reveled in being the object of regard,
O my beloved

I stand at the head of the sortie, a tear welling up in my eye
I stand at the head of the sortie, a tear welling up in my eye
Give me that magic in your eyes, that I may storm the castle tonight

O fairest among the fair of my land, O one whose hair is the waterfall of the valley
O fairest among the fair of my land, O one whose hair is the waterfall of the valley
You've stolen my heart from me, and you've left my eyes without tears
You've stolen my heart from me, and you've left my eyes without tears
Give me that magic in your eyes, that I may storm the castle tonight

I stand at the head of the sortie, a tear welling up in my eye
I stand at the head of the sortie, a tear welling up in my eye
Give me that magic in your eyes, that I may storm the castle tonight

I stand at the head of the sortie, a tear welling up in my eye

Thank you so much for this!!!! I loved your comments and agree it's probably a song from a man's perspective, or maybe a woman singing about a very pretty boy? Haha

If you're able to I'd love to know some more about the verse you think you misinterpreted, and also the phrase: أول نمرة

Thanks again for the great work!

Hahaha, I would like the song even more if it portrayed an irrepressible woman leading a resistence and serenading a pretty boy all at once, but if so, they apparently have a bit of a cheeky relationship, because she keeps calling him "her"! :P Still, this song rocks the way it is, because I'm realizing as I listen to it that you can actually hear that characteristic head-bob of the "Sha7roura" (or 'the Blackbird,' Sabah's petname among her fans) in her voice. Nobody could sing this song like she does!

The phrase "min hal-'add il mitl ish-sham3a" translates, word for word, to "from/with/using that amount/quantity/extent that (is) like the candle," so "You've inebriated the world with no wine, with a quantity [so tenuous] as to be compared to a candle." sounds like what is being said, except candles aren't habitually used as a standard against which tenuity is measured, are they? Perhaps I've misheard the word "2add" and it's something different being compared to a candle?

"Nimra" is simply a borrowing from some European word for "number." (As well as the feminine of the word 'tiger,' but this is relatively low on my personal list of meanings potentially intended here.) "Min awwil nimra" ('from the first number') is something we use to describe flats that lie so close to the coastline that there aren't any buildings blocking your view of the sea. I've rarely heard it used otherwise, but then again, I'm not Lebanese. It ruined the vibe of the song for me a bit though, because I was picturing the song taking place during the Crusades or something, and "min awwil nimra" just gives the distinct impression of being a modern coinage.

You can totally hear the head-bob! Can almost see her doing it and the big smile on her face as she sings ~

This does seem like a tricky verse to translate, is it perhaps something that makes more sense in Arabic and is hard to translate into English, or just nonsensical regardless?

It is a very stark comparison from the historical imagery to such a modern phrase! Wonder what the reasoning of this wording choice was (besides rhyming of course)
Thank you for such an in depth explanation as well - feel I learn so much from you!

Well, I can't make sense of it, personally. Reminds me of an expression, ولع لي صوابعه العشرة شمع ('he lit me all ten of his fingers for candles'), to express when somebody is being very attentive and dutiful out of nothing but the love and goodness in their heart.
Thank you so much for understanding though. I wouldn't mind trying my hand at translating some of your older requests so I can get my hands on more of that Eva sweet talkin', but there's always a turn of phrase or two that stop me in my tracks, so I wasn't sure whether to go for it.

Please go for it! I would definitely rather have an almost-complete translation with good explanation and references than no translation at all.
If it would not be too much work for you, I do have pre-fulfilled translation requests in which the translation is a bit shoddy - if you wouldn't mind looking over those I'd be ever so grateful (I can send you links if you are interested) ~

Slide on down into my DMs. ;) Once you get past the pesky fact that you have zero idea what you're doing, translating songs can actually be rather exhilarating. I'm basically Ben Fogle.

Readwriting Bonnet, thank you so much for your translation! As the transcriber, I had doubts about the same exactly the same details and love how you resolved them all. Please do translate more of Eva’s great song requests! And feel free to make corrections if I was the transcriber and got anything wrong,
