(Dovoenniy bilet)

Все посмертно равны - патриоты и космополиты;

A ticket to the past

Versions: #1#2
War promises us a long road ahead,
makes girls' faces grow old and smudges locomotives with soot.
Some will go with God, some will step away from Him,
but no one will escape the fate of the soldier.
I'd rather change my ticket to the front for one to the past1,
drink up the sea of time and get back home on dry land...
But as the hubbub of the station merges with the rumble
of the universe, I root myself in war in front of your very eyes.
Blast waves will blow us apart like flags on a map,
and we are not all fated to survive or earn our stripes.
Some will end up in second class trains to second class graves2,
others have their return ticket already booked in sleeping cars.
I'd rather change my ticket to the front for one to the future,
I'd give anything, even my vodka3 and food rations...
But, as individual fates join the stream of generations,
so does my grief pour into this common cup.
We're all equal in death, patriots and cosmopolites alike.
Time knows no deserters, the train always races to the end.
The earth gathers us in its veins like a single flow
of bloody corpuscles4 trudging toward the wounds5 of the planet.
I'd rather ask the cashier to exchange my ticket to the front
for the memories of these battles that rage inside my heart...
But this unknown soldier with a hole through his helmet's star
hides my rank and name in his vacant stare6.
  • 1. The pun is on "war ticket" (military ID) / "pre-war ticket" (a train ticket that would lead back through time to the pre-war era).
The same pun is reused with "post-war ticket" (ticket to the future) in the 4th stanza
  • 2. The Russian says "brotherly carriages" (second class cars), which evokes "brotherly graves" (mass graves)
  • 3. lit. "100 grams", the standard vodka ration. Alcohol is measured by weight in Russia, 100 grams is about 10cl, half a water glass
  • 4. lit. "blood cells" but that sounds pretty close to "[small] bloody bodies"
  • 5. lit. "the holes", which could also evoke graves
  • 6. lit. "his unclosed eyes"

Translated together with [@Green_Sattva] for the Russian and [@Gavin]. for the English.
Anatoli's version is more accurate, but we felt this beautiful song could also use a poetic interpretation.
