If I understand the history correctly, the tune was originally Scottish, but had completely diffeent words from the current version. The tune was picked up by the Irish, and the song "An chailin áluinn" was written to use it (a much nicer somg than the original words). Next someone made a Scottish adaptation of those Irish lyrics, which became popular rapidly in Scotland, and that's the song here: "A chailin àlainn".

I've tried to be as close to a literal translation as I can without losing track of the sense, for example not translating "gu siorruidh bràth" as " until eternal judgement" (word for word literal) of "until the great day of judgement" (what the phrase originally meant) but as "for ever and ever" (what it means today), but keeping things like "it is mournful that I am" which sound quite odd in English but are used in Gaelic to emphasize something (in that case the word "mournful") where that would be achieved by pitch/stress in English so the emphasis is not representable in a simple way in writing.
