Tu, que ora vees de Montemaior.

Tu, que ora vees de Montemaior,
tu, que ora vees de Montemaior,
digas-me mandado de mia senhor,
digas-me mandado de mia senhor,
ca, se eu seu mandado
non vir, trist’e coitado
serei; e gran pecado
fara se me non val,
ca en tal ora nado
foi que, mao pecado,
amo-a endoado,
e nunca end’ouvi al.

Tu, que ora viste os olhos seus,
tu, que ora viste os olhos seus,
digas-me mandado dela, por Deus,
digas-me mandado dela, por Deus,
ca, se eu seu mandado
non vir, [trist’e coitado
serei; e gran pecado
fara se me non val,
ca en tal ora nado
foi que, mao pecado,

Ti, que agora chegas de Montemor-o-Velho.

Ti, que agora chegas de Montemor-o-Velho,
ti, que agora chegas de Montemor-o-Velho,
dime as novas da miña dama,
dime as novas da miña dama,
porque se non recibo o seu recado
sentireime triste e con grandes penas,
e ela cometerá un gran pecado
se non me corresponde,
e maldigo a hora
en que nacín porque
a amo en van
e nunca obtiven recompensa dela.

se non me corresponde,
e maldigo a hora
en que nacín porque
a amo en van
e nunca obtiven recompensa dela.

This is definitely not Spanish nor Old Castilian. It is probably a variant of Portuguese or Galician.

[@Alma Barroca] Might it be Classical Portuguese?

BalkantürkBalkantürk    水, 26/01/2022 - 19:23

I understand it without any problem and I think it's medieval galician portuguese .@Metodius Could you help us? Moltes gràcies!

GeborgenheitGeborgenheit    水, 26/01/2022 - 19:27

Me too, I just don't want readers to be unintentionally misled. If Juan or Francesc (Metodius) can help us, it would be great.

Based on the source I'm inclined to say this is Galician Portuguese, but an old state of it. Maybe Middle Galician would fit better?

GeborgenheitGeborgenheit    水, 26/01/2022 - 19:29

Having reread the translation, yes, with phrases like "e ela cometerá un gran pecado", I think the language might be Middle Galician.

Pietro LignolaPietro Lignola    水, 26/01/2022 - 19:42

It's not old as the text of Gil Sanchez, who died in 1237. Perhaps, the translation was maked in XV/XVI century.

I think all content in that website is in Middle Galician, so if there's enough content in it we can add an entry for said language. I'll check soon.

[@Thalyson Teixeira] hey. Opinions?

Finally a topic on that! I, personally, support the creation of both "Middle Portuguese" and "Middle Galician".

It's important to mention that Old Portuguese is the same as Old Galician, thus we can refer to them as "Galician-Portuguese".
Middle Galician and Middle Portuguese came from what I call "Galician-Portuguese".

Latin > Galician-Portuguese > Middle Portuguese > (Modern) Portuguese.
Latin > Galician-Portuguese > Middle Galician > (Modern) Galician.

I'll talk about that to linguistics from Galicia, who made the movie "Desmundo". They'll answer our questions no doubt accurately! Many linguistics other than those did and do think that Middle Portuguese and Middle Galician are different from Galician-Portuguese and from each other.

I think that Middle Galician and Middle Portuguese should be included in the list of languages and cantiga it in the genre list..

Alma BarrocaAlma Barroca    日, 30/01/2022 - 18:43

'Cantiga' may fit in 'Folk' category for the moment. As for the languages, I agree, but we would need to check which page is under which language (well, and for that matter we would need to check every Portuguese lyrics added)...

Middle Portuguese started in 1385 and ended before the second half of the 16th century.
Before that, it was Galician-Portuguese.

Thus, Middle Galician automatically started in 1385 as well. I don't know when it became Modern Galician.
