Many thanks, Bertram! I take your point. On reflection, 'that girl' is an echo of line 1 of W B Yeats's poem 'Politics', which came forcibly to mind when I started on the Goethe. Goethe to the effect that: 'It is terrible to desire and not to possess; it is terrible to possess and not desire'. This too seems apropos.) In my defence: 'that girl' puts us on the spot with the speaker ('over there!'). My version is so far from Goethe anyway that it seems pointless to fiddle with it. I am about to upload a version which I think is closer to Goethe -- though I am probably always too colloquial.
