Jacques Brel - La Statue (영어 번역)

The Statue

I would like to get hold of the child of Mary
Who had carved under my statue
“He lived his whole life
Between honour and virtue”
Me who cheated my friends
From falsehood to falsehood
Me who cheated my friends
From New year’s day to New year’s day
Me who cheated my mistresses
From sentiment to sentiment
Me who cheated my mistresses
From springtime to springtime
That child of Mary I would like him here
And I would like the children not to look at me

I would like to get hold of the child of Lent
Who had carved under my statue
“The gods call back those that they love
And it was him that they loved the most”
Me who never prayed to God
Except for when I had toothache
Me who never prayed to God
Except for when I was afraid of Satan
Me who didn’t pray to Satan
Except for when I was in love
Me who didn’t pray to Satan
Except for when I was afraid of the Good Lord
That child of Lent I would like him here
And I would like the children not to look at me

I would like to get hold of the son of a bitch
Who had carved under my statue
“He died like a hero
He died like we no longer die”
Me who went to war
Because I was so bored
Me who went to war
To see if the German women...
Me who died in the war
Because the German women...
Me who died in the war
By being unable to do otherwise
That son of a bitch I would like him here
And I would like my children not to look at me

Qui a fait graver -> rather "who had 'whatever' carved under my statue"
Don't know if "who had carved under my statue..." would make sense. Sounds too ambiguous with plusperfect.

Pour voir si les femmes / Parce que les femmes -> that's like a pair of unfinished sentences. Pretty difficult to render the tone here. "To see if, by chance, German women..." /" Because, unfortunately, German women..." or something like that?

Ah of course 'fait' graver. See what you mean about the plusperfect but I don't think it's a problem taking the sentence as a whole.

I thought those to bits about the German women didn't quite makes sense. Perhaps if I add an elipsis...

Yes, the ellipsis would help. The idea is to put just enough into the sentences for the reader to fill the blanks easily.
