Votre salive, cherche arguments,
Ça va s'en suivre et pénalement.
Recherche la loi !

C'est ce qu'ils disent,
C'est ce qu'ils disent,
C'est ce qu'ils disent,
C'est ce qu'ils disent,
C'est ce qu'ils disent,
C'est ce qu'ils disent,
C'est ce qu'ils disent,
Seize kilos sur ton dos,
Seize mètres cubes derrière les rideaux,
Seize ans derrière les barreaux frissonnant.

C'est ce qu'ils disent,
C'est ce qu'ils disent,
C'est ce qu'ils pensent,
Et c'est ce qu'ils disent,
C'est ce qu'ils disent.

The cliche

On your résumé it's written white on black1
even if your image reflects the blood of blues-despair.
Sorry Mister, you're not Fren... The amount2
of money you want for wages is too expensive.

Minimal wage is decreasing, looking for arguments,
it must be your fifteen children3
you're lacking sleep, looking for arguments,
I advise you to work in building construction.
Go looking for a job!

That's what they say
That's what they say
That's what they say
That's what they say
Sixteen kilograms on your back now!4

Now about accomodation, looking for a flat,
not too roomy, neither too big, as expected.
Mister I see you neither have a job nor a lot of money
[sleeping] under the bridges or in a city block5 will suit you.

Very nice external walls6, looking for arguments,
still better than your Twingo7, not assuredly8
Is there a subway [nearby], looking for a workaround9,
anyway there is running water, especially leaks in winter.
Looking for a home!

That's what they say
That's what they say
That's what they say
That's what they say
Sixteen cubic meters10 behind your curtains, shivering!

At night you try to sober up in bars,
that's when a guy in a suit barges in and looks for trouble,
Goodbye mister or I'll call the police11
of course, pay at the bar12, this is how justice works.

The police arrives, looking for arguments,
You look a bit drunk, assuredly,
your saliva13, looking for arguments,
this will have legal consequences14
Looking for the law!

That's what they say
That's what they say
That's what they say
That's what they say
That's what they say
That's what they say
That's what they say
16 kilos on you back
16 cubic meters behind your curtains
16 years behind bars, shivering.

That's what they say
That's what they say
And that's what they say
That's what they say

  • 1. the usual idiom is "noir sur blanc"(black [characters] on [a] white [sheet]), meaning "quite clearly". That's an allusion to racial discrimination. A law was passed in France a few years ago to allow candidates to write anonymized résumés to avoid being turned down due to "foreing-sounding" names
  • 2. a pun on "French/frank/franc(as a currency). "francs que vous désirez..." is a rather broken way of saying "the amount of money you want"
  • 3. another racist cliché about people from African origin having multiple wives and many children
  • 4. does not ring a bell at all. I suppose that implies he will only find a warehouse worker job?
  • 5. The town is one of the many destitute suburbs of Paris
  • 6. ??? implying the inside of the building is shabby or something?
  • 7. meant as an emblematic cheap and shabby car
  • 8. that makes no sense, really. I suspect the idea was "you can't afford the insurance for your car" but the pun falls flat on its face
  • 9. ???
  • 10. assuming 2.5 meters ceiling height, that would be slightly more than 2x3m², barely enough to cram a bed, a table and a chair...
  • 11. pretty awkward allusion to people being turned down in bars and discos due to their skin color
  • 12. another terrible pun, the idea is "justice will be harsh on you because you're black-skinned"
  • 13. ??? I suppose the idea is that someone spits in someone's face, or maybe someone is wasting his saliva trying to discuss the matter
  • 14. the French is broken, but that's the idea
