I'm just not clear about how/why "otherworldly" and "cottage/hut" are incorrect. Colour me confused (not something unusual for me). Can you explain a bit?

Тут та же проблема, что и с "нездешним" - со словом "заброшенный". Он не обязательно означает "брошенный", но и "неуютный", "неухоженный" и даже "находящийся в далеком медвежьем углу".

Трудно сказать. Если она "непрошенная гостья", значит, есть хозяева, которые ее "не просили". Логично? То есть это не покинутая изба, а скорее где-то в глуши. Может родительский дом?
