  • 1. The final -و is not part of the standard spelling of the word, but is added to indicate that the nominative ending is pronounced even in pausa for scansion.

Shawl

Hair—on top of it a shawl
As rineldew1
Inviting view, the one and two
Breathe it all!

Pray tell, bubbles on the side2
Who formed you so—
Tailored you so?
Sweet as the dream of a bride?

Some cuddligoo whimpers and3
Scurries above
All ye in love
Proach, nighting brush held in hand4

But proach, with hands in their reel
Proach with the eyes
That never dies
Not unless you break the seal

The stars one picks off a shawl, oh what delight!
I live in fright
I live in fright
They could be seen—smelt at all

I've got a time set aside
Beneath a shawl—
A fantasy
Refuge—away from the tide

I've got a time set aside
Beneath a shawl—
A fantasy
Refuge—away from the tide

I've got a time set aside, beneath a shawl—
A fantasy
A fantasy
Refuge—away from the tide

How come I asked all the bloom
Where home should be
Only to see
It lies beyond the moon

  • 1. 'Rindala' is NOT a real word, but it brings to my mind a vague image of an exotic flower or an intricate Steam-Age machination of some sort.
  • 2. The word '7abaab' IS a real word, just an obscure one is all! It refers to the small bubbles that form on the surface of a drink when it is agitated. Compare the concepts of "tears of wine" and the "ouzo effect."
  • 3. 'Limsinya' is NOT a real word, but gives me the impression of some mythical creature, small in size, whose name is derived from the word 'lamsa,' which means "a caress."
  • 4. 'himm' is NOT a real word, but is used grammatically as a command in this context. It sounds close to 'humm,' which means "to approach" or "to begin to." Likewise, 'laylaki' is NOT a real word, but sounds like an adjective derived from the noun 'layla,' "night."

This is indeed a deliciously poetic translation. And I wish I could add an extra star for “cuddligoo whimpers,” which is now officially a thing and a word, as far as I am concerned.

OH MY GOD!!! You're the one who's deliciously... delicious! And yes, cuddligoos exist, and one of them is staring right into the camera in your PP, although I hope that cuddligoo only purrs and never whimpers.
