wish you were gay songtekst
- Five words you never say:
Billie uses comedic sound bits throughout the track to soothe the listener as she relays a somewhat somber message. The sounds are fair use, free audio effects of audience reactions from sitcoms. Billie wishes her love story was fake like a sitcom narrative. (via GENIUS)
- If three’s a crowd and two is us,:
This is based on the saying, “two is company, three is a crowd," which a couple would say if they have to entertain a guest, rather than enjoy each other’s company. The one that “slipped away” is Billie, since her crush finds another lover or just doesn’t love her the same way she loves him.
Billie also uses the countdown, “three, two, one” as a motif on this track. (via GENIUS)
- I just kinda wish you were gay:
Billie revealed the meaning of this line in a live Instagram session back in July 2018: "that’s so not meant to be offensive in any way. It literally means I wish he was gay so that he didn’t like me for an actual reason."
A March 2019, NME article points out that the boy in question did, in fact, come out as gay: "And guess what? He just came out to me like a couple weeks ago. So I wrote the song and made him fuck a dude. I’m fucking proud, bro! Except not really though because I was really into him, like so into him, he’s so hot oh my God, he’s so attractive." - Is there a twelve-step just for you?:
The “twelve step” program is used to help people recover from addiction. (via Genius)
- Our conversations are in blue
Eleven heys,:
In the iMessage app on Apple devices, the sender’s texts are in blue and the responses are grey. Billie is texting her crush, ‘hey,’ over and over and he’s not responding. (via Genius)
- Ten fingers pulling out my hair,:
Billie is describing Trichotillomania, commonly known as, “the hair pulling anxiety disorder.” The urge to pull out her hair comes from her inability to gain the guy’s attention. (via Genius)
- I ate alone at seven, six minutes away:
In the explanation video, “A Snippet into Billie’s Mind,” Billie said she made plans to eat with her crush at 7, but he showed up at 9:30, even though he only lived 6 minutes away.
Billie also uses some wordplay, counting down from 12 to 6 while using “ate” as the number 8. "I ate (8) alone at 7, you were six minutes away..." (via Genius)
