Chris Smither - Desolation Row

Engels

Desolation Row

They're selling postcards of the hanging
They're painting passports brown
The beauty parlor is all filled with sailors
You know the circus is in town
Here comes the blind commissioner
They've got him in a trance
One hand is tied to the tight-rope walker
You know the other one is in his pants
And the riot squad they're restless
They need some place to go
As Lady and I look out tonight
On Desolation Row

Einstein, disguised as Robin Hood
Wi' his memories in a trunk
Passed this way an hour ago
With his friend, a jealous monk
He looked immaculately frightful
He bummed a cigarette
He went off sniffing drainpipes
He was reciting the alphabet
Now you would not think just to look at him
That he was famous long ago
For playing the electric violin
On Desolation Row

(INTERLUDE)

Ophelia, she's 'neath the window
For her I feel so afraid
On her twenty-second birthday
Yes already she is an old maid
Now here comes Romeo, he's moaning
"You Belong to Me I Believe"
And then someone says,
"You're in the wrong place my friend
You better leave"
They all play on a penny-whistle
You can hear them blow
If you lean your head out far enough
In Desolation Row

Cinderella, she looks so easy
"takes one to know one," she smiles
She sticks her hand in her back pocket
Bette Davis style
To her, death is quite romantic
She wears an iron vest
Her profession's her religion
You know, her sin's her lifelessness
And the only sound that you can hear
After the ambulances go
Is Cinderella sweeping up
On Desolation Row

(INTERLUDE)

Yeah you know, I got your letter yesterday
About the time the doorknob broke
When you asked me how I was doing..
That some kinda joke?
All these people that you mention
Yes, I know them, they're quite lame
I had to rearrange their faces
And I gave them all another name
Right now I don't feel too good
Don't send no more letters, no
Not unless you mail them from
Desolation Row

Right now I don't feel too good
Don't send no more letters, no
Unless you mail them from
Desolation Row

Bedankt!

Here you go. I think I hear ALBERT Einstein and 'You're in the wrong PLAY my friend'.

Sorry about that. It seemed like a stand alone request to me and I thought maybe you just didn't know the original. But then you are not a simpleton... I can edit and replace the link with copied and pasted lyrics, but it sounds like you didn't want them transcribed at all, so I guess that won't help? It was a nice version.

i'm just transcribing the lyrics myself and there was a reason i put them up for transcript. this is nothing at all like the bob dylan version but smithers put this classic thru the sausage machine and mixed lines together from different stanza. please do me a favor and don't edit or touch anything i put on this database. thank you.
