Yep, I quite like this one too.
Off the top of my head I can recall a few more songs of his that deal with death one way or another:
"à mon dernier repas" (he pictures a last feast with his friends before his death)
"tango funèbre" (he pictures his own death in a rather humorous way)
"les vieux" (about how elderly people wait for the Grim Reaper to come - one of his most beautiful songs, in my opinion)
"la Fanette" (a tragic love story where the girl dies in the end)
"la mort" (the title says it all Regular smile )
"les désespérés" (about suicide)

A timeless classic. I didn't know he sung it in Italian too

Viola Ortes    Zat, 03/02/2018 - 16:36

Yes, he sung many songs in italian. He's 94 years old and he's gonna be in Italy the next 23rd of june for a unique concert after the one in Verona on september 2016. I hope I'm gonna be able to be at that concert.

Alma Barroca    Zon, 04/02/2018 - 19:38

petit élève    Ma, 05/02/2018 - 06:06

So nice of you to have added all these Brel songs.
To change the register, there is this early 18th century four voices worship song, picturing the anguish of death and ending with the day of reckoning, no less Regular smile
It can sound really impressive performed by a well tuned choir. For instance this version, used in the "Cold Mountain" soundtrack.

And also this beautiful tribute to Vladimir Vissotsky by Bulat Okudzhava. For those who don't know Russian music, Vladimir Vissotsky is the most famous Russian poet-singer, a kind of Russian national treasure.
Vissotsky also wrote songs about death, like this one that deals with his own fear of death in a symbolic way, or this one about the loss of a friend in war. The song is also symbolic, Vissotsky was too young to have fought during WWII, but it rings very true nevertheless.
