Мертве місто → Engels vertaling
Мертве місто
Dead City
- 1. This and three previous lines in the translation do not fully comply with the lines in the original. These four lines are the one phrase, and normal order of the words is different in Ukrainian.
- 2. The same - the 2nd line is the translation of the 1st line in the original and vice versa - the 1st one is the translation of the 2nd one

It is obviously that this song is dedicated to the city of Pripyat' that located near the 4th reactor of the Chernobyl's nuclear power plant. In 1986 the reactor exploded as a result of failed experiment. A lot of radioactive dust was emitted to atmosphere, everything for many kilometers around the disaster was polluted with radiactive elements. All the citizens were evacuated from the city and it was left forever. Today you can visit the dead city as a tourist (you will be instructed not to touch anything). You will feel like you have used a time machine and have come to past - everything is kept like it was in 1986 there. ;) And unfortunately everything is still radioactive there.

София, Вы что, язык забыли? :) Напишите это по-английски самостоятельно - это же Вы эту подробность знаете, не я... ;)
I need so much to find (my city) in the abyss (a reference to the next verse). Actually everything, starting from "I need so much..." till "...memory" is a single phrase.
Oh, thanks, that sounds much better (and I hope - more understandable :) )
The problem is that for us, the Slavs, this germanic necessity in mandatory object mentioning (to find it) seems a very odd (for we understand that from the context of the phrase). Also a relatively free word-order can make a real headache for a translator (however this feature is just fine for a poetry). :)
The sky in clouds- sounds good in Ukrainian. The sky is cloudy or covered in clouds. Also, Alex, why did you rearranged the lines in the chorus? The translation would've been just as good the way they were written .
My city,
That lives in memory.
Doesn't let go
Of that old fear
That from childhhood
Filled our hearts-
Before our eyes disappears
My city...
This is precise what is written in the original lyrics.
Doesn't let go OF the old fear. Hmm, didn't know one can say like this. Thanks for the information, nevertheless I'd like to leave my translation as is. :)
As you wish, but : The sky is cloudy, we have to go, the ghost city, always calls us... You can almost sing it.
Okay, I accepted the "cloudy" ;)
