Ghost Blues

Tomorrow's coming, what will it leave behind ?
I'm listening carefully to the faint ghost blues
Suddenly I remember this ghost blues
Telling me how we used to hold hands
Shedding tears ; Shedding sweat
As much as we have life ghost blues
It always shines on us holding hands,
The moonlight reveals the Taegeuk* truth

"It was a life of violence," Haraboji* told me
He crossed over to Japan at 14
In mere seconds he stole lives
The words that followed pierced my heart
"I was at the factory making ammunition," He confessed.
The tears on his dry cheeks followed his words.
All day long, as if obsessed facing the machine gun
But what he really wanted was freedom.
Under the ultramarine sky, just being alive was a decoration
Under a terrible rain, gathering scrap iron
My father followed : Takayoshi device factory
Village, factory, cemetery, everything being ruined
A tough life in a wheelchair, one eye is blind
He can't smoke either in this hospice
Looking at my face "Are you well?"
Even in this state, worrying about someone
"You're really a helpless, big idiot
So don't speak ill, go and live a small humble life"
The one thing you manage to say is a punchline
Like Einstein not embarassed of laughing
Heading right, he kept running
The ghost's memories are fragile, won't be recorded
"It was a life of violence," Haraboji told me
"But it was a good life"

Tomorrow's coming, what will it leave behind ?
I'm listening carefully to the faint ghost blues
Suddenly I remember this ghost blues
Telling me how we used to hold hands
Shedding tears ; Shedding sweat
As much as we have life ghost blues
It always shines on us holding hands,
The moonlight reveals the Taegeuk truth

Grandma listened to Grandpa
They naturalized as Japanese with the determination to leave their bones there.
They did it all : Coffee, Shisha and grilled meat
The difficulty of having one's business, I heard it
He was one stubborn old man who used to
Go for a stroll in Yoyogi Park every morning.
The one thing he fought hardest against
I heard the name of it, cancer.
Before I went to study abroad, I thought he'd say
"Go and learn about the world!"
But he looked at me and only said this :
"Go and stay lively!"
Then look at how lively I am
If it's annoying, get up and come here
I got it, you know, the DNA that makes you go bald
It would be nice if I didn't end up looking like you right
Grandpa, do you know about rap ?
Grandma says it's a bad joke but
I assure you it's interesting
To hold a mic in your hand, more so than jidaigeki*
At that time when you died,
For the first time, I learnt I was Korean
A life that went through an era, and it was so short-lived
This time, I'll go and visit your grave

Tomorrow's coming, what will it leave behind ?
I'm listening carefully to the faint ghost blues
Suddenly I remember this ghost blues
Telling me how we used to hold hands
Shedding tears ; Shedding sweat
As much as we have life ghost blues
It always shines on us holding hands,
The moonlight reveals the Taegeuk truth

The days went by unnoticed
Your words resounded the most in my heart
I'm going to live doing my best and to the fullest
In my own way, that's what I'll do for you.
I wonder when it was, that I remembered
The words you said, I wonder what it means to be strong
Death got closer, I finally realized
I'm a crescent moon, and I wish for the day
When I'm full to come, while looking up at the full moon
It's given mercilessly, this unfinished judgement
One day, when the hard work of the deceased is rewarded
The Moon and the Sun will come together
I couldn't hear those last words of yours
But I received it, the greatest love
I want to show it with a sincere attitude
The sun that shines on my back

The gorgeous Taegeuk* in the middle of the flag
Yin and Yang, the Moon and the Sun are overlapping

Comments van auteur:

*Korean for "grandfather"
*jidaigeki = period drama or historical dramas : TV fictions set in medieval Japan
*Taegeuk(Korean) = Taji(Chinese) = Taikyoku(Japanese)
The last iteration of this word refers to the ying yang symbol that's right in the middle of the korean flag.

Taiji is no easy principle to understand so here you go :

A couple suggestions...

パンモゴンナ is not a Korean term of address. In Korean it's 밥 멱었나? meaning literally, "Did you eat?", but is used as a way of asking, "How are you?"

太極 is pronounced as "taikyoku" in Japanese or "taiji" if referring to the Chinese pronunciation, so not sure where "taijitsu" at the end came from...

In this song though, they pronounce 太極 in Korean as 태극 "taegeuk". Since it seems like a nod to their Korean heritage, it might be worth using that word instead of Taiji. If not, then maybe just mention it in the comments? Also, since Taiji/Taikyoku/Taegeuk is a pretty deep concept, it might be a good idea to put a short explanation of it for those who aren't familiar with it.

Good job with this translation! I'd actually been working on this song for a while but never got around to finishing it.

For the "taijitsu" case I think I wanted to write "taijitu" at the start and I messed up. Thanks for helping out with パンモゴンナ, I was completely at a loss with this one. The patriotism, or at least the references to his korean origins are pretty obvious in this song so you're right, I'm better off translating everything as "taegeuk", I was just reluctant to do it because I wasn't too clear on what the korean term implied exactly.
Thanks a lot for your suggestions, If you think sth need more improvement, whether it's style or anything else, feel free (^^)
