Few small suggestions, but you did a very good job overall! Love your notes!
- Hold your walls --> Hold TO your walls (without TO, it changes the meaning = держите стены from держитесь стен)
- New portraits discovered from the attic --> it is either "from attics' discoveries" or "discovered in attics"

- try to keep alignment as much as you can

Идет волна! Смотрите в небо
Ловите брызги, берите их в горсть...
Идет волна! Не бойтесь грома:
В сущности, гром такой же, как вы, гость
Новая пьеса в истлевшем переплете,
Новая музыка, новый стиль...
Идет волна! Прислушайтесь к звуку,
Пока не начался новый штиль

Open to suggestions to improve the translation
I usually keep my own interpretations to myself, and will wait for others to comment on how they view the song, but this is one of those songs that really made me go "I want to translate". It, along with the vast majority of Soviet Rock songs are very powerful songs, politically, musically, and sometimes emotionally. And that is striking, in a time and place where a song like this could get Alisa into so much trouble, or Mashina Vremeni, or any of the others who wrote politically charged songs, it makes me wonder what went through their minds, but it put me where I am at and makes me feel, more than ever, that music is a form of speech, and that music, songs as meaningful as Volna all the way to the benign Elena Temnikova song, should be translated into every language so that people can hear what they have to say.
This brings me to what I feel this song is about, what is the meaning Alisa put behind it, what did they have to say. Well, this sounds a lot like how the USSR would've told its people to react to something like a new song, or a new role or character, hide, bury yourself and hide from it. And that there are people who'll call names to lead a charge of free idea into the world. This song tells a story, about what happens when someone fears any form of opinion or opposition against them in an attempt to control how people should feel and think, and the propaganda that goes behind it. There are lines in the song that sound so simple, but you look closer and you see a bigger picture, a bigger idea with meaning. But when you go into it deeper, you see that rebellious nature inside of Alisa. Here comes the wave, hide from it, but wait, go head, take a bit of it in, grab onto it, hold to it, it brings with it new ideas, but this is my interpretation
Please feel free to share your thoughts down below on this song, and feel free to correct any issues I made in translating it to English.
1. | Небо славян (Nebo slavyan) |
2. | Трасса Е-95 (Trassa E-95) |
3. | Вот так (Vot tak) |
1. | By the handful |
Yup.....I missed that one in my notes
I have a google doc and I try to do it by stanza. Stanza 1 in Russian, then below it is Stanza 1 again in Russian, and i repeat. Sometimes I mess up copying/pasting into here though so I'll quickly fix it!
Vladimir, I've edited the lyrics into a more convenient format and added the video. Please edit your translation layout.
One more thing замкнуть кольцо = to link the ring; Или замаскируйтесь, изменив падеж = Or make a disguise through changing your name (it's the most plausible rendering for English speakers)
That's a good translation. :)
Thank you, I'm glad you think that it was a very good translation. Funny story, back while learning Russian I've always struggled with translating this and kinda gave up. Then I was like "Meh, I've got nothing better to do than finish this." and I did. I guess it was because I was new to learning Russian at first, and then after having enough Russian under my belt it was a lot easier to translate.

I've been very, very hesitant on this song, especially translating. This is a very powerful song (both in the music and the meaning) and to me it has a special place for that reason. It also has a special place in my heart because I f****** hate trying to translate it. I don't know why but I've always struggled on this song, don't ask me why, I kept trying, it threw me out, and I kept coming back. But I'm 7(ish) translations in and now I must confront my fears like some sick ritual or something, and I felt like since I've got some time on my hands waiting on a mod for STALKER to finish unzipping out of a RAR file why not tackle this? (also the only reason I've updated the original lyrics this many times is because I forgot to put exclamation points after the Volnas and remove periods. I usually omit periods while using more of the "Bang!" punctuations. You'll notice if there is a pause or break by, well, pauses or breaks, so periods are useless for that, if it goes to a new line, it means there was a pause. And the other reason is when I pasted the lyrics it bork)
