Unfortunatelly this is a very archaic Portuguese song, and it gets hard to be translated into English. I think I better to explain the meaning of the entire song to you, at least I'm going to try to... since it is a lot complicated, even in Portuguese. I think you better, if you don't know, look for what means the word "contend", because that is the word that was in the song and I also did not know its meaning, then I had to use the translation as well.
The song shows that the person has been waiting for her beloved for a long time, and it caused a lot of pain for her. During several nights and dawns, she was waiting for him. Only when he appeared she was able to be happy again, and she explains about the "strenght" that comes from him to her, he makes her stronger.
The second paragraph was a little bit hard to understand but finally I got it. She wants them to be together, everywhere and every moment, that's why she points out some stuff that usually belong to each other, see:
Color > Hue
Piece (in this case, piece from) > Floor
Trunks > root
That is, she wants them to be together and belong to each other, as well as these things do. The conclusion is: without him, she can't live... this verse says everything: "You gave me a kiss and just then I was alive"

In spite of lengthy research for the lyrics of this beautiful fado, I failed and my Portuguese is too poor to even transcribe from the song. We do know that the lyrics are either by Vasco de Lima Couto and João Dias or by De Joao Dias & Alfredo Duarte. The music is by the famous fadista Alfredo Marceneiro. It's been performed by many fadistas.
