Hey Moryak |

Hey sailor

We'd like to, we'd like to,
like to sink to the bottom.
There we could, there we could
we could drink some wine.
On the ocean floor,
whether we're drunk or not,
no one can see us anyway.
Hey sailor, you've been away for too long.
I ended up forgetting about you.
I took a liking to some sea devil,
I got my sights on him1.

Weigh anchor,
stay to your stations.
Steady now, steady,
steady as she goes.
Let's bring a keg of rum
to this sea devil,
he can't resist that.

Hey sailor, you've been away for too long.
I ended up forgetting about you.
I took a liking to some sea devil,
I got my sights on him.

By the way, вы трезвый или пьяный (not "we")

We'd like

go to a bottom of ocean

Nobody won't see us there

I had enough time to forget you

Oops... I knew I was missing something... Thanks

Di, 10/09/2019 - 01:03

I think "I want to love him" is better.

Pinhas ZelenogorskyPinhas Zelenogorsky    Di, 10/09/2019 - 01:30

I wanna love him now?

silencedsilenced    Di, 10/09/2019 - 01:51

"reproduce the circuit" ??? I suppose that's idiomatic?

Now seriously, what's wrong with the idiom? She wants to seduce him, right?

Pinhas ZelenogorskyPinhas Zelenogorsky    Di, 10/09/2019 - 01:59

Sorry, I'm just about scheme of stresses:

silencedsilenced    Di, 10/09/2019 - 02:14

Ah ok. No, I didn't try to make it singable. Just a bit nicer to read.

St. SolSt. Sol    Di, 10/09/2019 - 01:58

It's him I want to love?
PZ is discussing whether the translation attempted to reproduce the metric pattern of the source.

silencedsilenced    Di, 10/09/2019 - 02:21

I don't know what the Russian implies.
As far as I know, in English "I want to love him" would mean she doesn't really love him but would like to.
It's rather used for old couples trying to fix a relationship than new lovers.
I rather think she wants him to fall in love with her. Or did I miss the point?

Di, 10/09/2019 - 07:20

She wants to be his lover and to love him.

Sophia_Sophia_    Di, 10/09/2019 - 07:42

silencedsilenced    Di, 10/09/2019 - 12:10

"I want to love him" sounds strange here. It would mean she struggles to feel love.
I'd rahter wait for an English native second opinion.

St. SolSt. Sol    Di, 10/09/2019 - 12:15

In the original the emphasis is on "him": (now) it is HIM who I want to love (or: screw, shag, etc.)
Regards.

BratBrat    Di, 10/09/2019 - 16:28

Well, the girl actually wants this 'devil' to become her tummy bumper. That's why she redefines her first statement "по нраву" which was already meaning that she likes the guy.
Note that the song appeared in Soviet times when it was impossible to use more precise definitions in lyrics. Wink smile

silencedsilenced    Di, 10/09/2019 - 17:49

All the more reason to avoid a word for word translation, don't you think?

BratBrat    Di, 10/09/2019 - 17:55

Sure.

BratBrat    Di, 10/09/2019 - 01:24

wheter you are drunk -> Whether you are drunk

And the footnote with ''I want to love him'' needs to be fixed.

silencedsilenced    Di, 10/09/2019 - 01:52

Thanks. Should be ok now. Unless you see something else?

Sophia_Sophia_    Di, 10/09/2019 - 07:47

Quote:

https://diletant.media/articles/28437035/

silencedsilenced    Di, 10/09/2019 - 12:04

Mmm.. I don't suppose it's about the real guy, rather a hardboiled sailor that can be compared to the guy, so "a" seems more likely to me.
