• 2. letteralmente “fare fieno”, il detto irlandese “make hay while the sun shines” significa cercare di trarre vantaggio dalle opportunità, che sono spesso fugaci e irripetibili. Si intende anche con una sfumatura sessuale: in italiano equivale al significato di cogliere la “mela”. E’ anche l’equivalente dell’espressione “battere il ferro finchè è caldo”. Qui la frase conclude l’immagine dei due separati da una profonda difficoltà (invalicabile) al fondo della quale si agita la passione: significa che il poeta non ottiene l’amore della donna
