Le chant des artisans
Je lime mes rimes à la machine
Dans l'atelier de ma petite usine
Je forme les mots en haut fourneau
Forge les gammes avec mon âme
J'polis mes vers au papier de verre
Ma poésie brute de fonderie
J'y serre mon blues
A la clef de douze
Ouais je suis un poète
De la clef à molette
Compagnons musiciens
Ici tout est fait main
Il s'façonne avec le temps
Le chant des artisans
Qui passe de coeur en coeur
D'un air d'opérateur
Oui j'ai la nostalgie
De la sidérurgie
Du temps où les héros
Etaient des mécanos
J'aiguise mes riffs à la rectif
Mon flot le plus abrasif
Pointe au redressement productif
Je tourne au tour mes ritournelles
Mélodies à la manivelle
Pour que les notes
Tiennent la cote
J'y fraise les phrases
Un peu trop jazz
Elle a pignon sur rue
Et vue sur l'avenue
Ma petite PME
Oui c'est tout un poème
refrain
Je perce les tierces
Ecarte les quartes
Esquinte les quintes
Et scie les sixtes
C'est dans les vieilles marmite
Qu'on fait les plus beaux hits
Et si je chante au noir
Le soir sous les hangars
Toutes mes chansons
Tombées du camion

Vertaling
The Working Men's Song
I file my rhymes with the machine
In the workshop of my little factory
I shape the words in a hot furnace
Forge the range with my soul
I polish my verse with sandpaper
My rough foundry poetry
I tighten my blues
With an Allen key
Yeah, I'm a poet
From the key to the wheel
Musician friends
Here, everything's made by hand
It's made over time
The working men's song
Which passes from heart to heart
From a machine operator's tune
Yes, I'm nostalgic
For the steel industry
From the time when heroes
Were grease-monkeys
I sharpen my riffs
My most abrasive flow
Is directed towards industrial recovery
I spin my jingles around
Melodies with a crank handle
So that the notes
Measure up right
I mill the phrases
With a bit too much jazz
It's gearing up well
Got my sights on the heights
My little SME
Is a work of poetry
Chorus
I drill the thirds
Separate the fourths
Smash the fifths
Saw the sixths
There's many a good tune
Played on an old machine
And if I moonlight as a singer
At night in the warehouse
All my songs
Fell off the back of a lorry

Toelichting van de vertaler:
Title - a play on words, of course, from the famous Chant des *P*artisans.
The whole song is full of brilliant puns and rhymes which, alas, don't transfer particularly well to English.
Where a looser translation worked without totally changing the meaning I did so, e.g. "clef de douze" - this is actually a 12mm spanner/wrench, but translated as Allen key to keep the key/clef analogy going. Or, because "C'est dans les vieilles marmites qu'on fait les plus meilleures soupes" is roughly equivalent to "Many an old tune played on an old fiddle" , "C'est dans les vieilles marmites
Qu'on fait les plus beaux hits" becomes "There's many a good tune
Played on an old machine...".
And so on. :)
Brilliant song!! :)
