Lines Written in Early Spring

I heard a thousand blended notes,
While in a grove I sate reclined,
In that sweet mood when pleasant thoughts
Bring sad thoughts to the mind.
 
To her fair works did Nature link
The human soul that through me ran;
And much it grieved my heart to think
What man has made of man.
 
Through primrose tufts, in that green bower,
The periwinkle trailed its wreaths;
And ’tis my faith that every flower
Enjoys the air it breathes.
 
The birds around me hopped and played,
Their thoughts I cannot measure:—
But the least motion which they made
It seemed a thrill of pleasure.
 
The budding twigs spread out their fan,
To catch the breezy air;
And I must think, do all I can,
That there was pleasure there.
 
If this belief from heaven be sent,
If such be Nature’s holy plan,
Have I not reason to lament
What man has made of man?

J'ai entendu mille notes mélangées,
Alors que dans un bosquet je me me détends assis,
C'est dans cette douce humeur que d'agréables pensées
Amènent de tristes pensées à l'esprit.
 
À ses belles œuvres, la Nature faisait un lien
A travers moi parcourait mon âme,
Et cela me faisait beaucoup de peine
De penser à ce que l'homme a fait de l'homme.
 
À travers des touffes de primevère, dans ce vert berceau,
La pervenche traînait ses fioritures;
Et, ma foi, je pense que chaque fleur
Apprécie bien l'air qu'il respire.
 
Les oiseaux autour de moi sautaient et jouaient,
Leurs pensées je ne peux pas mesurer: -
Mais le moindre mouvement qu'ils ont fait
Semblait un vrai frisson de plaisir.
 
Les brindilles en herbe étalent leur éventail,
Et ce pour attraper l'air frais;
Et je dois penser, faire tout ce que je peux,
Qu'il y avait du plaisir là-bas.
 
Si cette croyance du ciel est envoyée,
Si la Nature a ainsi crée son Sacré Plan,
N'ai-je pas raison de me désoler
De ce que l'homme a fait de son prochain?
