Spruitje-Radijs

Spruitje radijs,
Jij, m'n kleine meid,
"M'n leven moet iets fijns,
Iets groots, iets heerlijks zijn.
Zo moet m'n leven zijn."
Spruitje radijs, spruitje radijs

Spruitje radijs,
Spruitje radijs, spruitje radijs

Spruitje radijs,
Jij, gegaan ben jij
Missiezuster in merg en been
Spruitje radijs, spruitje radijs

Spruitje radijs,
Jij, m'n kleine meid,
Spruitje radijs, spruitje radijs

  • 1. I couldn't understand this part at all, but I wrote down the words I could understand and compared that to the French version. It may not be correct, but I went with what made the most sense. If someone does understand this part, please leave a comment below.
  • 2. Refering to God's life, I suppose. Can't really understand what she's saying here, so again, I went with what made the most sense.

Little sprout radish

Little Sprout Radish,
You, my little girl,
I know how cheerful you told me that day
In May there in that meadow 1
"My life should be something pleasant,
Something big, something wonderful.
That's how my should my life be."
Little Sprout Radish, Little Sprout Radish

Little Sprout Radish,
You, how tall did you become?
And in your heart God the Lord lays 2
Down the hunger for the true bread 3
That gives joy and life
That everyone needs
The bread that gives life
Little Sprout Radish, Little Sprout Radish

Little Sprout Radish,
You, you have gone
To the Hindus or the Sioux or the Zulus
You carry only God's word and love
Missionary Sister from head to toe 4
Missionary Sister to the core 5
Little Sprout Radish, Little Sprout Radish

Little Sprout Radish,
You, my little girl,
I know how cheerful you told me that day
In May there in that meadow
"That God makes my life pleasant
And beautiful like His 6
A life, wonderfully pure."
Little Sprout Radish, Little Sprout Radish

  • 1. 'Bij mij daar in dat veld:' should be: 'In mei daar in die wei"
  • 2. 'En in je hart streek God de Heer could be 'En in je hart vlijt God de Heer'
  • 3. 'De honger neer met heerlijk brood' should be 'De honger neer naar 't echte brood'. I'm not sure about 'En in je hart streek God de Heer, De honger neer met heerlijk brood'. What I hear is: 'En in je hart ? I choose vlijt because it goes with neer ('neervleien'; to gently lay down) and because I hear her sing something that starts with p/b/v + l. I couldn't find any other verb that that starts with neer + pl/vl/bl. Does it make sense at all, even in a religious song, to say that God gently lays down the hunger for the true bread?
  • 4. Although 'van top tot teen' is correct, I can clearly hear her sing 'van kop tot teen'. The translation stays the same though.
  • 5. From the context I understand that 'in merg en been', like the previous line, means that she's 'every inch a missionary Sister', which is a positive expression, whereas 'merg en been' is usually used in a negative way. For example 'Dat geluid ging door merg en been' = that sound chilled me to the bone. Based on her accent and how old the song is, it might just a regional thing or archaic speech.
  • 6. @Ambroisie, Zijn' indeed refers to His life. It's an archaic way of saying 'als het Zijne'.
