A nightbeam Sorrow - печальная луна watcheth to behold - смотрит созерцая
Distinct, but distant - ясный, но далёкий - clear - but, oh how cold!
Я тоже не get.
PZ, I don't know what is happening - no one had ever addressed or compared you to бездарность.
I felt it was okay to tell you that you created a lovely poem, but it isn't what Byron wrote. I believe that it does refer to the moon - maybe, due to enough sleepless nights, but more likely because it was encountered in reading. I recently read that poets are uniquely sensitive people - another fact confirming that I am not one. Take it easy.
P.s. At night, one doesn't see the sun. What lovely golden disk is there?

PZ, you should know by now - there is nothing I dislike in your poem. I didn't get the same message, but 42 gave you 5* so he gets it completely. Please disregard my note - translated as you felt it, it's just fine.
I don't have time now to give it sufficient attention. I miss Brat who verbalizes much better when he disagrees with the content. And I miss Jadis with his humor. Maybe, they will add notes.
Best,
D
A nightbeam Sorrow -
watcheth to behold:
watcheth archaic third-person singular simple present indicative form of watch
Distinct, but distant -
Sun of the sleepless, A nightbeam Sorrow
1) отдельный; особый, индивидуальный; отличный (от других - from) distinct way of thinking — особый склад ума Syn: separate , several , individual 2) а) отчетливый; внятный, четкий, ясный; членораздельный Syn: clear , audible , intelligible б) определенный, явный Syn: plain I 1., definite 3) отмеченный (чем-л.) Syn: decorated , adorned
Thanks

Don't crucify me, please. I just found it today and translated it. I tried to understand it/analyze it and then I did something which works not bad (at least for me) on short poems - I translated the lines without seeking the meaning, just selection of words for each line/a couple of lines. I got a not bad result (if I say so myself) and than I turned to your comments. Your discussion gave me an entirely new insight: It is definitely the Moon and it fits the description in the poem. The moon is a “sun” of insomniacs, it gives light but not heat, it glows but can’t burn. “Sorrow” is part of its image: target both for the lovers and howling wolves. Unless it’s a full moon you have to watch out for its rays to “see” them. I think we’ve accounted for the light (more like a glow), no heat, even cold, it’s clear at full moon, it’s even distinct and distant. Being distinct has a number of aspects: first, as a definition it is THE object not AN object. Stars in the sky can be a star or the star, moon is THE MOON, no others in our orbit. Secondly, although distant, it is quite well defined on the night sky. The unique definition is, in my opinion, the major part of the attributes for being distinct, the capability to differentiate it from the others, even at a distance. And the explicit name: “MOON” is not mentioned even once – brilliant. The funny thing is that thanks to you I understand now the poem much better but with my mechanistic approach it seems I don’t have to change even a single word. BTW: I started the comment the day I’ve submitted the translation but could finish it only today.
