Hello Perestroika

The day is cloudless, the sea blue
Each person now breathes to the fullest
The hammer and sickle never hurt anyone
Now they mean for us to do their happy work

Hello perestroika, democracy
One nation is escaping from the claws of a dictatorship
Hello perestroika, hello peak of happiness
The red flag does not seem so terrible anymore

The tractor plows the field, the tree bears fruit
"The People's Voice"1 -- its mouth doesn't lie, doesn't smoke
Now all censored movies are shown in the cinema
Now censored musical bands can be heard

Hello perestroika, democracy
One nation is escaping from the claws of a dictatorship
Hello perestroika, hello freedom
Now pioneer's song is in everyone's mouths
Auuu auuu

Now, the militia uniform does not make you sick
It can even be called made of silver
Look, the militia and punks
Are now friendly, lending a hand to one another

Hello perestroika, "ta de ri de ra"
Now the land belongs to you and me
On every year's anniversary -- a Grand October
The people will celebrate jubilantly, auuu
Auuu auuu

Not a single well will run dry in Virumaa2
An airship touches down in front of the mausoleum
Okay, what do you say! -- democracy is so great...

...So you admire this open-mouthed

Hello perestroika, joyous homeland
I'll tell you (that) while I'm getting you
Hello perestroika, democracy
Hello perestroika, give me your hand too

Tere!

Some small corrections.

1) Diktatuuri küüsist on pääsemas üks maa -> One state/nation is escaping from the claws of a dictatorship
2) Enam nii jube ei tundu punalipp -> The red flag does not seem so terrible anymore.
3) Keelatud filmid kõik kinos jooksvad nüüd -> Now all censored movies are shown in the cinema
4) Kõlab ka keelatud bändide hüüd -> Now censored musical bands can be heard.
5) Now a pioneer's song is in everyone's mouths -> Now pioneer's songs are in everyone's mouths
6) Nüüd miilitsamunder ei aja öökima - Now the militia uniform does not make you sick // does not nauseate you
7) He can even be called silver - It (i.e. the militia uniform) can even be even called made of silver (the color of the Soviet militia uniform was silver)
8) Miilits ja punkar sõbralikult näe
Ulatavad teineteisele nüüd käe - Look, the militia and punks
Now friendly lending a hand to one another
9) taderidera - it really means nothing
10) Grand October - Great October ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/October_Revolution )
11) Mausoleumi ees maandub õhulaev - an aircraft lands in front of the Mausoleum (give link to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mathias_Rust )
12) Ei no mis sa kostad - OK, what you say (about it)!
13) Et seda imetledes lahti jääbki suu -> So you admire this open-mouthed
14) Ütlen sulle tere niikaua kui sind saan - I'll tell you (that) while I'm receiving/getting you

At least now you got some Estonians to look, and criticize, your work.

Btw, is there a short word for Estonians? like Esti's or something? - that would be cool :)

El_SelenitaEl_Selenita    Ma, 13/05/2013 - 06:20

Estonians are "Eesti" :) Btw, I'm not a native Estonian. :)

TrampGuyTrampGuy    Ma, 13/05/2013 - 11:16

Ohh cool, I did remember something like that :)
and Russia is close enough ;) plus you're living in Tallinn - do you work for skype or anything? ;)

El_SelenitaEl_Selenita    Ma, 13/05/2013 - 12:24

Oh no, not all people in Estonia work for Skype. :) I work for Tallinn University of Technology, hope they are not upset with my work. ;) And Tallinn is really a great place to live and to travel, so I invite all of you to visit our beautiful country.

TrampGuyTrampGuy    Ma, 13/05/2013 - 12:27

maybe one day indeed :)

TrampGuyTrampGuy    Ma, 13/05/2013 - 13:12

you never know, and a short trip is always an option too.

El_SelenitaEl_Selenita    Ma, 13/05/2013 - 13:17

But why? Why are you so sure? And, btw, why Estonia? OK, for me its my motherland where I was born and where I have spent most of my life, so I really love it. But you? :)

TrampGuyTrampGuy    Ma, 13/05/2013 - 14:03

Hey, the US has some lovely places too - you literally have it all. There are single states that packs all you mentioned, and more.

barsiscevbarsiscev    Ma, 13/05/2013 - 14:34

But always keep in mind the fact that Russia
is one of the most criminalized country in the world.
Here your life, health and money will be in constant risk
of criminal assault and terrorist attacks.
Millions robberies, thousands killings every day,
and bomb explosions also almost every day.

El_SelenitaEl_Selenita    Ma, 13/05/2013 - 14:56

Is it a joke?! I have been in Russia many times and have never got any problem. Once I was robbed a camera in Romania and swindled by a taxi driver in Spain, but in Russia I have never had anything like this. :)

barsiscevbarsiscev    Ma, 13/05/2013 - 15:57

не знаю, по сравнению с Казанью, где почти каждый день
взрывы, стрельба, поджоги, побоища - Чебоксары
сущий рай - тишь и гладь и божья благодать.

barsiscevbarsiscev    Ma, 13/05/2013 - 16:03

у меня в Чебоксарах сестра замужем, я там иногда бываю.

El_SelenitaEl_Selenita    Ma, 13/05/2013 - 18:16

Казань - это чудесное место, не надо ля-ля. :) Гораздо лучше Москвы. :)

El_SelenitaEl_Selenita    Ma, 13/05/2013 - 14:31

I have been in Peterburg (many times) and Kazan (3 times). I liked them very much, specially Kazan. I don't know why, but it is a really nice city. And the most beautiful underground I have ever seen. Once I thought that the Moscow underground is the best. Now my underground preferences are: 1) Kazan; 2) Moscow; 3) Lissabon. It seems that I have also spent about 1 year in Chelabinsk, but I was only 2 years old and don't remember anything. :)

TrampGuyTrampGuy    Ma, 13/05/2013 - 14:18

You really don't sound like the typical spoiled American - most of them don't even care to look out the window, let alone travel across the world xD
It'll be funny if once you get to Estonia, you'll find them to be so massively affected by your culture xD

El_SelenitaEl_Selenita    Ma, 13/05/2013 - 14:37

We have several McDonald's in Tallinn. Starbucks had plans to get one as well, I don't know if it has already opened. My daughter loves McDonald's very much, but I don't. It's not so bad, but there are much better places in the Old Tallinn...

El_SelenitaEl_Selenita    Ma, 13/05/2013 - 15:01

Nothing really special, I think. It is just a simple and good peasant cuisine. Most of national Estonian food is some adaptation of German, Swedish and Russian meals, or a mixture of them. I like it, but I like Balkan food even more.

El_SelenitaEl_Selenita    Ma, 13/05/2013 - 14:49

Yes, Estonia is beautiful. I don't know if it is _unspeakably_ beautiful, but there are many really nice places. Tallinn is worth to be visited, yes. A "plain tourist" may get here a fun for a day or two, one who loves medieval cities, walls, towers and churches may find a pleasure for some days or even weeks. There are some beautiful pieces of nature: lakes, rivers, islands, swamps. You may even find some small waterfalls and several small relatively fresh meteorite craters. :) Yes, considering the small area, it is not few. But, unfortunately, there are no really GREAT individual items, from the point of view of size and value. The largest waterfall is 20 smaller than Niagara, the largest meteorite crater is 10 smaller than Barringer, the oldest church is 6 times younger than the Piramides in Giza, the church that once was the highest building in the world is now 6 times lower than Burj Khalifa... But yes, you can reach any of these objects within 4 or 5 hours. :)

El_SelenitaEl_Selenita    Ma, 13/05/2013 - 15:50

You know, I have just got an idea, may be not very good, but... If you really think Estonia is a paradise, such a wonderful place, "das Wunderland" as they say in in German, "võlumaa" as they say it in Estonian... Probably you should never come here, so you will never be disappointed. It would remain in your soul as an unachievable dream, a kind of impossible love. :) This feeling is much better than even a smallest disappointment that often happens with one who reaches his goal. So, while you really think that Estonia is a paradise - don't visit it! But than you start thinking that it is just a small Northern country, beautiful enough to be attractive but with its problems - come here, you are very welcome. At least, it is the only possibility to practice Estonian, it's a chance to visit Helsinki, that is called "little Peterburg" and that is only 3 hours far by ferry, and to visit Peterburg itself that is ~6 hours by bus. You'll also be able to practice Russian (~50% of Tallinn population is Russian-speaking and ~95% of Narva are Russian-speaking, so Narva is a small piece of Russia in Estonia). And of course I'll be at your service. :)

I've been to Estonia 3 times and I'm in love with this country! I hope I'll start living there in 2 months... ;) Ma armastan Eestit!

El_SelenitaEl_Selenita    Zon, 19/05/2013 - 16:38

OK, if you need some help, don't hesitate to write. :) You're from Poland, aren't you? I have spent summer vacations in Poland 3 times, me and my wife loved your country very much. Last summer we were in Krakow, it was really exciting.

SlowymaPercypowanoSlowymaPercypowano    Woe, 22/05/2013 - 19:14

Aitäh! Today I've begun to learn Eesti keel, because I love that language too ) I've always had to speak English or Russian in Estonia. I'm going to live together with my fiance who already lives in Tallinn ) And if you and your wife are interested in Poland, then I recommend you both Wrocław - the most beautiful Polish city, it's not only my opinion )
