This song is taken from psalm 137 and is a hymn expressing the yearnings of the Jewish people in exile for Israel, following the Babylonian conquest of Jerusalem.

** it literally says "over the head of", which is a way of saying over, above.
*** the meaning here is to remember Jerusalem even in times of happiness. For example, the second paragraph is customarily said by grooms at Jewish wedding ceremonies before breaking a glass as a symbolic act of mourning the destruction of the Temple.
