The Bonny Ship the Diamond

„The Diamond“ is a ship, my lads,
For the Davis Straits she's bound,
And the quay edge, it's all garnished up
With 14 lashes 'round.
Captain Thompson gives the orders
To sail the ocean wide,
Where the sun it never sets, my lads,
Nor darkness dims the sky.

So it's cheer up my lads,
Let your hearts never fail,
For the bonny ship „The Diamond“
Goes a-fishing for the whale.

Along the quays at Peterhead,
The lassies stand around,
Their shawls all pulled around them
And salt tears running down.
Along the quays of Port Phillip,
I stand alone,
Pining for Rebecca Dreiling
And hating my life.
Now don't you weep, my bonny lass,
Though you be left behind,
For the rose will bloom on Greenland's ice
Before we change our mind.

So it's cheer up my lads,
Let your hearts never fail,
For the bonny ship „The Diamond“
Goes a-fishing for the whale.

Here's health to the "Resolution",
Likewise the "Eliza Swan",
Here's a health to the "Rattler of Montrose"1
And „The Diamond“, ship of fame.
We wear the trousers o' the white
The jackets o' the blue
When we return to Peterhead,
We'll hasten sweethearts to you.

So it's cheer up my lads,
Let your hearts never fail,
For the bonny ship „The Diamond“
Goes a-fishing for the whale.

[Solo]

Oh, it will be brack, both day and night,
When the Greenland lads come home,
We're a ship that's full of oil, my boys,
And money to our name.
We'll make those cradles for to rock
And the blankets for to tear,
And every lass in Peterhead will sing,
“Hushabye, my dear.”

So it's cheer up my lads,
Let your hearts never fail,
For the bonny ship „The Diamond“.
Goes a-fishing for the whale.

[repeat until fade]

HISTORY:
The Diamond was a whaling ship which hunted in the Greenland seas. The song was originally written in 1812, when the Diamond first set off. The third stanza was added later, when the Diamond, along with about 20 other ships, were squashed in the ice in 1819. Most of the crew managed to escape. In 1830, a similar tragedy happened, with a different Diamond, and other ships accompanying it. The ships' names were changed then, to Resolution, Eliza Swan, Rattler, and Montrose. Then "Rattler and Montrose" were changed to "Battle of Montrose". The original, most ancient version of this song has Hercules, Jane, and Bon-Accord listed. For more info (there's a whole discussion going on the web because of this):

Also, even though this text says "fourteen lashes" in the first stanza- by the way, a "lash" is the rope on which ships are tied to the dock, but usually 1 or 2 of them is enough- the original version says "bonnie lasses", which means "pretty girls". But I wanted to leave lashes and lasses, so that's how I got there.

La bella nave, la Diamond

La Diamond è una nave, ragazzi miei
che è in partenza per lo stretto di Davis,
e la banchina è piena di belle ragazze
in giro

ben avvolte nello scialle
a piangere lacrime salate.
Lungo il molo di Port Phillip
resto solo

indossiamo i pantaloni bianchi
e le giacchette blu
quando ritorneremo a Peterhead
avremo nuove innamorate

Su col morale, ragazzi miei,
non fate tremare i vostri cuori,
quando la bella nave la Diamond
va a pesca di balene

[Solo]

Diventerà luminoso sia di giorno che di notte,
quando i ragazzi della Groenlandia ritorneranno
in una nave piena d’olio, ragazzi miei,
e con denaro a nostro nome,
faremo dondolare le culle
imbottite dalle coperte
e ogni ragazza di Peterhead canterà:
“Ninna nanna mio caro”

Su col morale, ragazzi miei,
non fate tremare i vostri cuori,
quando la bella nave la Diamond
va a pesca di balene
