Let's start :) I love Folque so I might get picky ;)
jeg setter hundre daler mot ti
What does ".. mot ti" mean here exactly? I'm not really sure and I don't really get the ".. to ten" translation? (btw, valleys might sound better than dales, even though it's less literal)
In the 2nd verse you misspelled "good" in your translation. I would have translated it as:
"As a maiden I shell enter the good green forest
and as a maiden I shell also return" (same goes for the 1st verse, but that's just my take).
My take:
"With a cloak so fine and a rose as red as blood
And a bunch? of green twigs by his foot
Tre ganger hun gikk rundt sin sovende venn
tre ganger hun kysset hans kinn
My take:
"Three times she circled her sleeping friend
Three times she kissed his cheek
Three times she laid her hand on his chest
While he laid there in his deep sleep"
og bandt den fast i hans hår
Dette for å la sin kjæreste forst
My take:
"and tied it tightly to his hair
This was to let her lover know"
My take:
"At the break of day he awoke at last
he found himself alone and lost/forgotten
shamefully he recalled his daring words
and knew he had lost his bet"
My take:
"Three...
Three...
But I could not wake you from your deep sleep
and so your loved one was gone"
All in all, I like your translation, I also used to translate more literally just until recently. I would love to get some background info on the story behind these lyrics if there is one, and if you can find it.
Thanks :)
Daler, or Riksdaler is an old type of norwegian coin. It was large and made of silver. I found information that a serving girl could earn 10 Daler in a year. Daler comes from the same word as Dollar
