Song of Praise to Our Lady of the Cloister in Solsona

Since you love us so very much
As you are our Patroness saint:
Do protect your children
In the city of Solsona! 1

When the earth was tied
To the harsh yoke of sinfulness,
So that your image wouldn't be profaned,
They kept you hidden in a well.

Everyone has named you...
After the cloisters where that well is placed
Do protect your children
In the city of Solsona! 2

One good day, a child was playing there
And he fell into the well's waters;
His mother though that he was already dead,
But she heard him speak up thus:

- 'My dear mother, be not aggrieved:
I've already found someone to help me!'
Do protect your children
In the city of Solsona!

The monks and the city's inhabitants
Rushing there at once,
Found that the child was still alive
Resting in your most sacred hands.

The statue, who smiled at them,
Was lit up by a lantern:
Do protect your children
In the city of Solsona!

Without any clouds up in the blue sky
A great clap of thunder shocked everyone,
And the lantern was lit up
By a bolt of lightning that came form the sky.

This very obvious fact
Is a showcase of your power...
Do protect your children
In the city of Solsona!

Since you love us so very much
As you are our Patroness saint:
Do protect your children
In the city of Solsona!

  • 1. Goigs (literally "delights"), also known as gosos, goggius or coblas in Sardinia, are devotional Catholic songs normally sung in solemn events, such as Grand Mass or other important celebrations and religious festivals. They are of Catalan Medieval origin and their main characteristic is their popular origin, as they are never written in Latin.
  • 2. According to the legend, during the XIII Century's Albigensian Crusade against the Cathar sect and its many supporters among the Occitan nobility, a group of Cathars crossed the border and went into hiding in Catalonia. They reached Solsona and became very prominent and, as they were iconoclasts, the local clergy hid the statue of the Virgin Mary in a well next to the town's cathedral so it wouldn't be destroyed. Then, a few years later, a child was playing in the area and fell down that well, but was rescued by the statue, thus performing a miracle. Immadiately after, the statue was returned to the cathedral and a cloister and monastery were built around the well. Since then, the image has been known as Our Lady of the Cloister. The story can be found in this link (the text is in Catalan).
