Sentenced

While we could have shared the big loaf of bread
for the sake of fight for just a bite of it,
here we are, alone, side by side, at the end;
like the last strings of a broken saz1
We sentenced ourselves
to live alone and alongside
We sentenced ourselves
to living this way forever
to getting older
without learning about love
without knowing the youth

While we could have loved each other privately
for the sake of protecting our inner worlds
here we are, alone, side by side, at the end;
same as the last poles of a branch2

We sentenced ourselves
to live alone and alongside
We sentenced ourselves
to living this way forever
to getting older
without learning about love
without knowing the youth

We sentenced ourselves
to live alone and alongside
We sentenced ourselves
to living this way forever
to endless cold nights
to loveless loneliness

  • 1. A traditional Turkic string instrument played mostly for Turkish folkloric music, bağlama.
  • 2. dalın direkleri (pillars/poles/supports of a branch) doesn't make any sense and there is no such an idiom, it would make much more sense if it was 'damın direkleri' (poles of a roof) which maybe what Barış Manço was saying.
