Average Jane

Perhaps there's one better, perhaps
Perhaps there's one worse, all right

But like the Jane¹ I've got
There's none like her in this whole wide world
Average Jane, it's Jane and she's Jane my darling

If I'm not John "of Nothing"²
Jane of mine is Average Jane

Average Jane is Jane like all the others too
But she's still better than many Janes out there
Janes so cold with strange habits
Janes so empty to bear that name

Average Jane is a gift for very few men
Given the amount of Janes there is and no Jane to them

Average Jane, it's Jane and she's Jane my darling
If I'm not John "of Nothing"
Jane of mine is Average Jane
Jane of mine is Average Jane

Gabriel, I'm not good at getting the meaning.
Is he saying that there are many people out there with a name, different people to whom some like better, some like less, but that this "no-name" or common name is very special to him, his love for her makes her special. And he is also a "nobody" implying that he hopes he is as special to her as she is to him ? Would that be a good summary ?

It's been a while, I update the lyrics just a little bit (dear - darling | "Nothing" as a surname).
Yes! Many women named Maria/Jane. No, not quite a "no-name", but a specific Maria/Jane that he loves very much. Yes, he hopes he's as special to her just like you said :)

Hey man, I just updated the lyrics. I reckon Average Jane clears up what you asked – it's not about the ordinary name (so common in Brazil it usually has to be followed by a second/middle name) but about ordinary, simple women. And I think he only considers himself to be special when realizing he has such a woman in his life. That sums it up and I actually think I've finally understood the damn song, lol!
