Smoke

The smoke stretched along the river Don
The bullets started to whistle Cosaks
...The bullets started to whistle Cosaks
The sharp bayonets started to sparkle at night x 2

Brother went against brother color against the color
The elder one was married the younger one wasn't
...The white and the red entwined with each other so
Oh the vain blood was shed on the earth x 2

Oh, the heat lightning flashed over the river
Oh, the bloody one flashed and that battle trailed off
...What have I done oh my God
I have killed my younger brother with my own hand x 2

His whitish forelock is whispering by the wind
My snub-nosed little brother is lying in the feather grass
...Forgive me my brother I couldn't notice you
Oh, what shall I say to our mum, you, stand up my little brother x 2

Doesn't "-" mean "is/are"?

ScieraSciera    Domingo, 29/12/2013 - 13:34

My Russian is pretty rusty but in school (where I had 4,5 years of Russian lessons) we learned that there's no Russian word for "is" or "are" but that instead Russians would write an - at the part of the sentence where the is/are is missing.
So I'd guess that these lyrics here mean
"Babkin's grandchildren are ''Smoke''"

yes, you're quite right, i've got to change it

ScieraSciera    Domingo, 29/12/2013 - 14:01

Well, "бабка" does mean "grandma" but I didn't find "бабкина" in a dictionary.

Бабкины is a possessive case of Бабка

ScieraSciera    Domingo, 29/12/2013 - 14:09

Are you sure? I'd guess that the possessive case would be "бабки".

ScieraSciera    Domingo, 29/12/2013 - 14:20

Ah, it's an irregular one then? Sorry for my former comment then.

Thanks Zaza77! Indeed, I wanted the translation of the lyrics inside the video ;)

The one outside is just the title... :D

Babkin's grandchildren is the name of the band. Its leaded by Vladimir Latenkov :)

@zaza77: Uhm, why did you now add the complete lyrics into the translation field instead of asking a mod to update the lyrics field?
I've updated it, you should better remove the Russian lines from your translation now.

@Ahmet Bey: Do you speak Russian?

Guys, I guess you are not Slavs. I do not mean it as an offence. I just came to this by reading your comments. Let me tell you some things you got wrong. We keep learning all the time :)
First of all, I will tell you, that I am a Slovak studying Russian culture and language. Now let´s get to the point:
1. Бабкины means granny´s (it is an adjective). Try to put бабушкины into translator. This is just another form of that word commonly used in families. Noun from бабкины is бабка.
2. "-" just means neither "is", nor "are". Since Russian lenguage doesn´t know these verbs, they do not need to use them in the form of "-". Conclusion: "-" is the same "-" as in any other language. It is strange that they do not use these words, but we just have to get used to it :)
I hope I did not offend anybody. I wanted to be helpful.

BratBrat    Domingo, 19/08/2018 - 18:02

Well, I just want to make some clarifying input here:
1. "Бабкины внуки" really means "Granny's grandkids" ;)
2. As for the "-" sign - it's often used in lyrics to mark a pause in singing/speech. In Russian, we don't use the "to be" verb when speaking about the present, but still we do this when speaking about the past/future: (Я инженер./I am an engineer. Я был инженером./I was an engineer. Я буду инженером./I will be an engineer.) We could either insert the dash in between the verb and its nominative or deal without it - it's optional. So, the translation of the corresponding line is correct.
3. Some comments on the translation itself:
S1L1 The smoke -> Smoke (in this and the other lines of the stanza mass nouns are meant, I guess)
S1L2 Cosaks -> cossacks (a comma before it is also welcome)

S2L1 the color -> color (again, a mass noun)
S2L4 Oh the vain blood was shed on the earth -> Oh, as the blood shed in vain onto the ground

S3L1 the heat lightning -> heat lightning (it goes without articles, usually)

S4L1 His whitish forelock is whispering by the wind -> The wind is singing in his whitish forelock
S4L3 I couldn't notice you -> I couldn't have noticed you (this has a better sequence of tenses)

S5 -> "The" is redundant at the beginnings of the lines, as stated before.
