A natural state, I'm sought by all.
Go without me, and you shall fall.
You do me when you spend,
and use me when you eat to no end.

Question:

John has some chickens that have been laying him plenty of eggs. He wants to give away his eggs to several of his friends, but he wants to give them all the same number of eggs. He figures out that he needs to give 7 of his friends eggs for them to get the same amount, otherwise there is 1 extra egg left.

What is the least number of eggs he needs for this to be true?

Solutions:

1) @petit élève is right (but accidentally switched the names):
Tom was born on 31st December 2003 a few moments before midnight (and so he will celebrate his 15th birthday this year), while Jerry was born on 1st January 2004 a few moments after the new year has just begun (and so he already celebrated his 14th birthday this year).

2) Putin is a funny reply, and you are also right with him, but it was not the solution that I wanted for my riddle:
It's the month January which derives from "Janus", the Roman god of all beginnings and endings (and a lot more) who had two faces looking at the past (=the old year) and at the future (=the new year).

A mother is 21 years older than her child. In 6 years the mother will be 5 times older than her baby.

Where is the father?

Riddle #856 by @Maria Kritikou:

mother's age: m / baby's age: b

(I) m-b=21 ⇒ m=21+b

(II) m+6=(b+6)×5 ⇒ m+6=b×5+30 ⇒ m-24=b×5 ⇒ b=m÷5-24

(b→I) m=21+(m÷5-24) ⇒ m=m÷5-3 ⇒ 0.8m=-3 ⇒ m=-3.75

(m→II) b=-3.75÷5-24=-0.73-24=-24.73

⇒ The mother is -3.75 years old and the child is -24.73 years old… WAIT, WHAAAT??? Teeth smile
And I have no idea what the father has to do with it or where he might be! Wink smile

Teacher: Children, who can solve this problem? There were 3 geese and 4 ducks flying in the sky. How old I am?
Bob: You are 26.
Teacher: Good! How did you guess?
Bob: Well, I am ** and my mother calls me a ********.

How old is Bob? How does his mother call him?

Where is the father?

Let M be the mother's age and C the child's

(1) M = 21 + C
(2) M + 6 = 5C

using (1) in (2) yields

21 + C + 6 = 5C => 4C = 27 => C = 27/4 = 6 years and 9 months

Assuming the child was concieved the old fashioned way, the father must have been within a small distance of the mother about 7 years and a half ago.

Therefore, the father is necessarily located in the space defined by all the points reachable in 7 years and a half using every possible means of transportation available to mankind.
That should confine him to an approximately 6.600 km radius sphere centered around Earth.
With the extra hypothesis that he isn't an astronaut, the radius can be further reduced by approx. 200 km.

No, you made a mistake. The second equation should be M + 6 = 5*(C+6). If you do solve the equations, you find out that the baby is yet to be born.

The error was supposed to make the solution funny. Oh well, you can't win them all...

Suppose you want to send in the mail a valuable object to a friend. You have a box which is big enough to hold the object. The box has a locking ring which is large enough to have a lock attached and you have several locks with keys. However, your friend does not have the key to any lock that you have. You cannot send the key in an unlocked box since it may be stolen or copied. How do you send the valuable object, locked, to your friend - so it may be opened by your friend?

Lock the box and send it, then send the key in a separate parcel? Or just have your friend use whatever tool at hand to pry the box open?
