Jamais dame

Never lady

I believe that I'll never call you lady
Because you aren't like the other women
I dunno if i can call you like
me usually i describe the men

You put on a difficult name it seems to me
I can't call you like the other girls
in any case i can call you all the time
and if i cry too much

you're so strong that it's scary
to say that we should be like it
to cross all these errors
you're so beautiful that you don't know
but me i know the largest of your admirers.

sometimes you forget to be solid
so i know from where i hold my passion
when after a feverish smile
you're in tears for no reason

The excessive feelings,
she, your flower of skin
She makes bouquets
and likely to be vexed
If asked to go higher
after you have to go find it.

I believe that I will never call you lady
Because you aren't like the other women
I don't know if i can call you like
me usually i write the men

You put on a difficult name it seems to me
I can't call you like the other girls
In any case i can call you all the time
and for now it will be Mom.

fleur de peau is a fixed expression meaning a kind of emotionalism, isn't it?
At least Benavente translated the line as y su sensibilidad a flor de piel
I hope our Frenglish Gurus will plump into the topic to enlighten us...

That's almost the same to that I've expected to hear from you. ;) I read that fleur is the upper layer of skin. So, there is a wordplay, am I right. I mean the following Elle en fait des bouquets. I've already found a nice way to formulate this in Russian. :)

The better it is for Leila, if so. She's making discoveries, I guess. ;)

There are a few mistranslations there:

Te mettre un nom me semble difficile -> lit. "putting a name on you seems difficult to me"

Je sais pas si je peux t'appeler comme moi d'habitude je décris les hommes -> lit. "don't know if I can call you the way I use to describe men"
"je sais pas" is not as casual as "dunno". It's just a usual shortening in spoken French, like omitting the pronoun in "[I] don't know..."

Et si je pleure trop t'en f'ras autant -> lit. "and if I cry too much you'll do the same"

Thanx!

se dire qu'il faudrait -> "se dire que" rather means "to think" or "to say to yourself", and "il faudrait" refers to the singer : "to think I should be like that"

That's rather amazing! In 1989 one "sharp" Russian girl wrote almost the same:
Вот сижу я такая баба
И думаю что не такая вовсе
Даже не думаю а стараюсь знать
You should know her...

petit élève schreef:

traverser toutes ces erreurs -> "traverser" as "go through", "endure"...

Maybe "to cope with" will match too?

petit élève schreef:

que tu le sais pas -> that you don't know it [that you're beautiful]

le plus grand d'tes admirateurs -> your biggest fan

Thanx!

petit élève schreef:

t'oublies d'être solide -> "solide" as "strong", "enduring"

I also think so.

petit élève schreef:

d'où je tiens ma passion -> "tenir [de]" as "inherit", "take after [someone]" (I know where my passion comes from [implying it comes from her mother])

Good!

petit élève schreef:

susceptible à s'en vexer -> "likely to" would be "susceptible de". Here "à" means "to the point of..." like in "travailler à s'en rendre malade" (working oneself sick)
lit. "so sensitive it[the skin] easily feels offended"

That's what I've supposed. ;)

Well as I played the social worker in child protection I met quite a few teenage girls in a hate/love relationship with their mothers.
It's something that allows quite a few shrinks to earn a living too :)
Not many singers try and succeed in conveying the feelings stirred by such kind of sweet and sour relationship though.

George Harrison was one of them...

Yes, that's quite close. "traverser" implies it is both difficult and taxing.

Thanx!

Actually my all time favourite on the theme of relationships with one's mother is this one. There was more to The Police that met the eye, in my opinion.

Yeah, Andy Summers rules, indeed!
BTW he rules either. ;)

Yeah, Sting sucks, being alone. I mean, his music still rules, but the lyrics suck...
