A song of the land of starvation (Regional Anthem of Kainuu)
Hear the whispering of our wilderness,
the splashing of our ruggish lakes!
Our reputation is brought up by those
roaring rapids and scrubby swamps
Our liberty is in these forested hills!
Our song is shores of the bays'!
To us, the spring has brought its fairies,
Trushes and capercaillies sing here too
A journey thou be wearisome - thus let it be!
The nature perhaps is stingy - thus we contend!
In rural area of our sullen birth province
may our huts stay hidden in there!
will o' the Malevolence, o' fall silent!
rascals, bandits steer clear!
sword is not necessary - diligence is enough
on behalf of the heritage, the kin and the province.
Boast a new faith of country into thy chest,
Dishearten sorcery and conservatism!
Farmer, remember where thee happines is
thy sovereign barn full of riches
Kin of Kainuu, let the die be cast!
Where is thine stance, the exemplery?
We have build a country a new,
wretches should go overseas.

Sobre o tradutor
The song has been made in 1911 after three crop periods on 1866 - 1868, 1891 - 1892 and 1902-1903. During these years local government officials falsified documents about actual starvation deaths and help from capital city did not arrive in time. People simply did not have any food to eat so they carved most trees in Kainuu to provide bark for flours. According to local historians some families lost their children because children digestion was not able to properly consume wood bark breads thus died lack of nutrition. A wide young age generation perished during these years. To make matter worse farmers often didn't own their houses or fields but were renting them. They got only small portition of harvest and rest was rent payment to master.
Thus this song was ordered by Kajaani's farmer society from Ilmari Kianto and composition from Oskar Merikanto, to lift spirits and raise a new hope into government officials who neglected their studies during starvation. Society's secretary said there are too many verses in song and worked together with lyrics composer to rearrange into current form.
I tried my very best to put into correct translation so actual timeline message can be seen what they actually meant during the correct timeline. Very tragic things behind the song but people did not give up and it is said there is some special kind of guts (sisu) in Kainuu when compared to other provinces of Finland.
