Sonnet 42
That thou hast her it is not all my grief,
And yet it may be said I loved her dearly;
That she hath thee is of my wailing chief,
A loss in love that touches me more nearly.
Loving offenders thus I will excuse ye:
Thou dost love her, because thou know'st I love her;
And for my sake even so doth she abuse me,
Suffering my friend for my sake to approve her.
If I lose thee, my loss is my love's gain,
And losing her, my friend hath found that loss;
Both find each other, and I lose both twain,
And both for my sake lay on me this cross:
But here's the joy; my friend and I are one;
Sweet flattery! then she loves but me alone

Sonetul 42
Acum e-a ta! dar asta nu-i singura-mi tristețe,
– Deși de-atâta vreme fu mândra mea iubită –
Că ești al ei mă doare și c-o să te răsfețe,
Ce am pierdut e dublu, mă roade, mă irită.
Oh, trădători!… Și totuși simt gânduri de iertare:
Tu o iubești pe-aceea ce îi păstrez iubirea;
Știind a mea ardoare cu dorul ți-e datoare
Și de-al tău drag iert totul pierzându-mi fericirea.
Da, de te pierd pe tine, iubita, ea, câștigă;
Pe ea de-o pierd, ți-e soarta nestinsă primăvară:
Aproape-mi sunteți, totuși, ca umbrei o ferigă,
Dar eu în răstignire-s ca soarele-n deseară.
Da, tu ești eu acuma, și-s bucuros, iar ea
Fiind a ta, prin mine, etern rămâne-a mea…
