Along Peterskaia Street

Oh, along the Peterskaya Street,
along Tverskaya-Yamskaya,
Yes, oh, oh, along the Tverskaya-Yamskaya 1
With the sound of the bell
Oh, a man rides the three
Oh, and he rides wearing a trenchcoat. 2

Oh, I was at a feast in the gazebo
Oh, I don't drink, only just liquor and vodka 3
Oh, yes pour some sweet vodka,
Oh! I drank a half-bucket as if I was a young girl! *

O-o-o-oh!
What do you mean where and like what
The ice isn’t cracking and the mosquitos aren’t biting,
As neighbors to neighbors drags a pikeperch over.
Oh-oh-oh-oh!
Oh, godmother, you darling,
cook the pikeperch, to make yushka 4
Oh-oh-oh-oh!
Oh, yushka, yes with parsley,
My love, sweetheart, I kiss you

Now kiss,
Well, kiss me sweetheart, my love. Oh!

  • 1. A street in Moscow, I am sure the WWII Nazis were singing this song as was the French for the few seconds they were in Moscow...
  • 2. If a native could help with this stanza. Folk songs are hard sometimes, поддевочка is под девочка as one word, which makes this endeavor more confusing.
  • 3. He is talking about a very expensive aged whiskey (Мёд) and that liquor and vodka is cheaper so that is what he prefers to drinks. This was weird to translate into English
  • 4. A native Ukrainian dish. Makes sense since Pikeperch is a type of fish, and early yushka was made with fish or other meat bases. Also, they’re probably talking about Zander according to Google

Would he be saying this in reference to loving the street? I know that sounds weird but you get what I mean, he loves the street so much he wishes he could marry it?

Alright, it makes more sense that he is saying "my love" where the god parents are at since that sounded strange. To me, personally I can see where you're going on "her denying she drank" but at the same time I feel it could also mean "you don't just drink sweet honey Vodka" looking at it from a lyrics standpoint, like "You don't just drink honey or sweet vodka, you do..." and goes on about Yushka. I'll change around godparents to "my love" since that makes a lot of sense

На троечке = на тройке —> тройка = a Russian vehicle pulled by a team of three horses abreast - there’s an English word “troika” for it
В поддёвоке = в поддёвке —> поддёвка = type of Russian cold weather clothes
Миленький — definitely big boy, not a little girl, like ‘darling’, ‘honey’
== So he is riding troika (with a foot note) wearing a trench coat ;)

Мёд — antique Russian alcoholic drink made of honey
Молода[я] — technically, young me, but it more just another word for a girl

Кум и кума — actually not her love, they are gotparents (or their spouses) of the same child, or, for instance, father of the child and child’s godmother. It is actually immaterial here, you can as well say neighbor to neighbor or guy to gal takes that mysterious fish ;)

And he is asking her to kiss him

Updating now! On the topic of мёд what is the English equivalent

IgeethecatIgeethecat    Vineri, 01/02/2019 - 02:47

It’s like at least 20 years old whiski made of honey, herbs and berries. Only rich could afford it and they drink it at very special ocasiones. This is why she says Не мёд, a сладкую водку, наливочку - vodka and liqueurs are cheap :)

That makes more sense! Is "I didn't see any aged whiskey, but vodka and liquor is cheaper" Хорошо?

Нет. “I didn’t drink (or if you insist “see”) honey (footnote), only/just vodka and liquor (footnote)” or something like this, I don’t put words into your mouth, I’m just trying to explain the meanings. The cheap part was an explanation, it is not the lyrics , footnote would be more appropriate ;)

Thank you! I'll footnote it. Yeah footnoting would be helpful here. "I don't drink honey, only vodka and liquor" that makes more sense. Thank you again! Now every time I look at the lyrics I keep remembering the song in my head and Leonid Kharitonov excellent performance, he makes this song good in my opinion.
