A heron flying in the skies
A heron flying in the skies
Landed on a tree-stump
Its feathers spotless, snowy
He spoke words of consolation
"O Rama! Be at peace,
...for I am going to narrate...
...what I know about Sita"
Kama afflicts both of you, but Dharma does protect
Rama, you roam the forests out of love for her
The Sita you describe, in your melancholic song
Is nothing compared to the Sita I saw with my eyes
In the chariot of the twenty-armed
Ravana, flying southwards
I saw her, being carried away
The lily and the moon I see every day
She wasn't even smiling, yet her beauty excelled both of them
Bead-like tears rolled from her eyes, falling from the sky
Poets would have used the simile of a fish spewing pearls
But no; fishes are no match for her
Defeated by her countenance, they hide in water
And I catch & devour them.
As she went, a sweet fragrance engulfed the earth
Bees chased her, enamoured
Her radiance would defeat even lightning
It reminds me of a lotus surrounded by bees
The Veena, it stands nowhere
When one has had the fortune of listening
To the calls of "Rama, Rama"
Of poor Sita, weeping for her loved one.
The Veena is no match for her!
Now you shall ask, where did you, a heron, hear the Veena?
At the core are the seven swaras, isn't it?
From the frog Dhaivata, from the peacock Shadaja
From the cuckoo Panchama
These eternal swaras ring in my ears
And so have I learned them all
From mother nature herself
Pleased, Rama said, "Ask for a boon, heron."
"May I get food at home during the rainy months?"
Rama said, "So be it, your wife will fetch the food
"And feed you during the monsoon, o heron."
"How can I eat the leftovers of my wife?" he jumped
"Don't you drink the nectar of her lips?"
"There is no harm in it."
If the creator conspires to keep Sita away from me,
Then even the creator will be destroyed by me!
Having uttered so, Rama fell into silence
Awaiting the arrival of the Vanara army.

Russia is waging a disgraceful war on Ukraine. Stai cu Ucraina!
Guru Balaram Gouda, trained in the ancient tradition of Sakhi Nata in Ganjam sings a chhanda from Kabi Samrata Upendra Bhanja's (1670-1740) magnum opus Baidehisa Bilasa ; Bake Basithila Dhruba Upare This chhanda describes in typical Bhanja wordplay the conversation between an inconsolable Rama and a heron who has just seen Sita being kidnapped ; the heron tells Rama the fate of his beloved one. Set to Asadha Sukla Bani (ଆଷାଢ଼ଶୁକ୍ଳ ବାଣୀ). From a session at Naikanipalli, Ganjam, Odisha. Shot by Debendra Pattanayak, Arjun Samantaray and Prateek Pattanaik.
