Besides this, every song from Songvakeppnur (the Iceland national selection) has to be performed in Icelandic first. That means that all songs sent by Iceland in English have an Icelandic version too.

Really? Then why isn't there icelandic versions of All out of luck, Is it true? and Je ne sais quoi.

I probably shouldn't have said "all".
I guess they changed the rules from the 2011 edition onwards. In the semifinals artists have to sing in Icelandic. If they advance to the final, they are allowed to sing in the language they want to present the song at Eurovision. Some keep it in Icelandic, others change it.
So I guess all songs Iceland sent in English starting from 2011 have an Icelandic version too.

Thanks for all of those! That's interesting - I wish the artists performed in their native language... And also that making foreign versions of the songs was as popular now as it was in the past...

AnerneqAnerneq
   Duminică, 05/06/2022 - 22:04

I don't think the problem is that it's not popular anymore, rather that foreign versions don't get as much success as the original one these days. Many also release these covers locally and don't get much exposure elsewhere.

Zarina01Zarina01    Duminică, 05/06/2022 - 22:14

Also wasn't it a mandatory rule in the past, that all songs in eurovision had to be sung in their native language?

AnerneqAnerneq
   Duminică, 05/06/2022 - 23:22

The rule has been scrapped and brought back multiple times over the decades, yeah. Since 1999 artists have had the freedom to choose whatever language they prefer.

I just read the Wiki article on how many languages have been present in the ESC (and how often). I'm surprised (in a good sense) with some of them, like sign languages and conlangs. I hope I get to watch it next year, I promised to myself I would do it in 2022 but was only able to watch a few performances... Or maybe I should consider watching it on YouTube and not on cable...

And, well, that a language makes its debut appearance in it :D

Thanks for all those, I added those that already were added as lyrics. I guess 'Mängusal' and 'Vagad ja vaiksed' need to be added as lyrics, if they're really songs - not as translations.
