Corona 02: Und so geht die Freiheit zugrunde

"Und so geht die Freiheit zugrunde –
Mit donnerndem Applaus!"
(Zitat von Padmé Amidala aus Star Wars in Episode III - Die Rache der Sith)
+ + +
War die Welt für dich nie schön?
Deine Hoffnungen vergeh'n?
Gut, dann träume oder trinke,
Wenn's sein muss, im Wahn versinke,
Nur darfst du nie so weit geh'n,
Dass du alles redest schön!
Schieb nicht vor die Kinder dann,
Wo man sich verstecken kann.
Denn du fällst in ihren Rücken,
Um dich vor der Macht zu bücken.
Diktatur schleicht gern heran,
Wo man sie frei wählen kann.
Freiheit endet - frei gewählt!
Die Geschichte hat's erzählt:
Der Reichstagsbrand, der uns schockierte,
Zur Ermächtigung schnell führte,
Schwelt jetzt in der ganzen Welt,
Die in sich zusammenfällt.
Und wer niemals etwas galt,1
Drängt sich nun auf mit Gewalt,
Wenn man dich so hat genommen,
Stimmst du zu, vom Schock benommen,
Liegst dann da, ganz leer und kalt,
Und Beifall durch die Zeiten hallt.

Corona 2: So This Is How Liberty Dies

"So this is how liberty dies—
with thunderous applause!"
(Quote from Padmé Amidala in Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith)
+ + +
Was the world not nice enough for you?
Have your hopes and dreams all left you, too?
Well, then, keep dreaming, or drink away,
or let your madness lead you astray.
All that said, don't go so far
as to sugarcoat how bad things are!
Don't use your children as a crutch
when things have gotten to be too much;
don't give in to the politicians
by putting your children in such a position.
Dictatorship is a slow-grinding mill
that chips away at your free will.
Freely chosen was freedom's end;
so the story goes, my friend:
The Reichstag fire, which shocked us so—
and dealt the government a hefty blow—
has swept through the planet, ablaze again,
while the world as we know it has begun to cave in.
As for those on whom the door has closed,
so violently they have imposed.
When you're picked in such a way,
you agree without having had your say.
You lie there, shocked, empty, and cold,
to resounding applause from young and from old.

Wow! Jacob, what powerful words and rhymes you have found! I am impressed! Well done! Thank you so much! 👍

Thank you so much! I am glad, you like it. 😊
All that become more and more a horror story - some experts say, COVID is extremly dangerous, other experts say, it is not worse than other types of influenza. So it has become a stupid war of ideology now. And meanwhile in the USA they are drinking disinfectant? So sad...

Vera JahnkeVera Jahnke    Marţi, 28/04/2020 - 10:27

Don't worry, Jacob, it is a global problem. Here it is allowed to live for example in France and to work 8 hours a day in Germany with you colleagues. But these people are not allowed to go to a supermarket or gasoline-station in Germany. So what shall these people do, if they cannot buy gasoline here? Go by public transport?? - It is one thing to take care for your health and another thing to create more and more stupid regulations.

We had to write a bizarre statement of the time and reason for leaving home (no more than one hour) during the 55 days that our French lockdown lasted. You could theoretically write it freely but there was an official form with a lengthy list of tick boxes to state the precise reason of your breach of "confinement", as it was called here. You could get a 135€ fine for failing to produce the paper.

Vera JahnkeVera Jahnke    Sâmbătă, 30/05/2020 - 18:07

What about women giving birth in France? Here they have to wear masks during this process.
Whether they have to fill out a form, why they are not at home, or have to pay a fine, I don't know.

The whole situation is so bizarre that I can understand, why some people believe that there must be a "masterplan". And if you ask "who will profit?" it is not difficult to find answers. But, and that is my idea, maybe the people have always denied the possibility of death. We are living in a consumer's paradise, forever happy and – forever young. More and more very young girls spend their money for beauty-operations. And more and more very old people are no longer living in our society, they are locked out in old-people's homes. So we have suppressed the death completely. And now Mr. Black is back! And that's why the people are so scared now that they are not able to see the clear facts.

silencedsilenced    Sâmbătă, 30/05/2020 - 19:25

No, babies were still being born during the lockdown. Most medical operations were stopped, except for emergencies and heavy therapies like cancer. That will most likely cause a lot of borderline people will die sooner than expected, but they will be much less visible so why give a damn? The crazies will go a lot more crazy too, since they were basically left to fend for themselves, but, hey, they are crazies, so who cares?

I am not being paranoid about it. I don't think there are any conspiracies, just powerful individuals and lobbies greedily trying to seize opportunities, damning the consequences. I find that quite enough to explain why we're stuck so far up the well-known creek without paddles.
I totally agree with you. We're pampered, immature kids whimpering in fear of the reaper.
Every homo economicus is indeed an island under siege. A weak, puny individual disconnected from their surroundings, their kind, their past, their future. Stuck in the prison of their self in an everlasting present. With no possibility to escape this perishable self than returning to nothingness, no wonder we cannot bear the thought of death.

Vera JahnkeVera Jahnke    Sâmbătă, 30/05/2020 - 21:40

Yes, there will be a lot of collateral damage, but nobody will count them, and if they do, then only, when they have the virus inside. And then they economical aspects you also mentioned: Since 2008 (Lehman) we have a worldwide Zombie-economy. Investment-companies and hedge funds have concentrated astronomical sums of money, so they can trade with ETFs, whole stock exchange indices (as for example the DAX), they can do short selling to earn money by "killing" weaker companies, meanwhile the central banks give money-infusions to a comatose market. Moreover, Saudi Arabia makes a (real) war with cheap oil, so it is the other way round: SARS-CoV-2 is not the culprit (because we have definitely less victims than in the years before), but the scapegoat of predatory capitalism.

I remember, when I was very young I wanted to emigrate to New Zealand, because I was afraid of the impending atomic war between East and West, in which most of the people would die. But then I realized that I wanted to go to New Zealand to survive there, so I only worried about my own single life, and that was a shock to me. How selfish! Like one of your disconnected islands. And this "atomic war" was nothing more than a metaphor for my own fear of death. "Corona" and the "loss of personal freedom" are – maybe – other metaphors of it. For me it is very important to find any sort of truth inside of me. So another aspect: What about all the pressure during our education, all the cruelty we have experienced in our lives? Maybe we have become a sort of deep-sea-fish, which can only survive under big pressure? Like people with traumata and their friend-enemy-scheme. If they have only this experience, wouldn't it be easier to life in a world, which correspond to that? Many questions, no answers.... "Freedom" itself is a questionable value. If you are totally free, you have no relations at all, no connection to anybody and anything. The same with "truth". Do anybody want to tell his children the straight truth? No, because it can be a killer. So, Corona has many sides, and for me it is interesting now to find out, what I can learn from it...

Truth has two possible meanings: either what two independent observers can agree upon (that would be scientific truth, for instance), or simply what two people can agree upon (that would be Trump's truth, for instance).
Trouble is, we have no choice but to fall back to the 2nd definition except for what we can undoubtedly see for ourselves. You cannot verify that Newton's law works for satellites, unless you manage to build your own rocket in your backyard and achieve orbit. All you can do is trust people that tell you it works. You cannot count oil barrels, you don't know how people live in those countries you see pictures of on TV, you don't know what any of these goddamn numbers we get bombarded with actually means. At best you scribble them on a bit of paper and try to build a minuscule bit of understanding of an infinitesimal aspect of a specific problem. All the rest you get by agreeing or not with various opinions of people you trust for mostly irrational reasons.
Truth cannot spread if too many people entrusted with it start to lie constantly in your face. Which is exactly what happens, on an industrial scale, since social engineering took flight in the 50's. Goddamned spin doctors kidnapped Truth and sent her whoring on every sidewalk.
What little truth (1st definition) we can gather is woefully insufficient to, say, cast a meaningful vote. Democracy is screwed in a society too complex to be grasped by its citizen as long as truth can be bought and sold on such a grand scale, in every aspect of our life.

As for liberty, it has become a justification for gross abuse of power, intemperance to obscene levels and a very peculiar subversion of equality, namely the odious "equality of opportunities" that allows to screw over the poor and slap their failures in their faces. As for brotherhood, it's not even a communist obscenity nor a laughing matter any more. Just a symptom of mental illness.

After reading you comment I had to think about my poem about the slipper animalcule. What, if it could speak? What would it say about its life in a drop of muddy water? I guess, the same as you. The 1. truth, the scientific one is too complicate to understand, even for some quantum physicists. Everything is possible everywhere and depends on your observation, your mental orientation. Only in a small scale? No, but there it is easier to detect. By the way: Why is this theory so "religious" or esoteric at all?... As a slipper animalcule has no scientific background, everything is possible for it at every time, too. So only your 2. truth remains, the Trump-truth. As I am a little bit old-school, please allow me to call it the Asch-truth (and I mean the Asch-experiment about conformity). If there approach a bigger ameba (the majority), the slipper knows that this bigger one is always right. It is the same with Orwell's four fingers. So what have changed after millions of years of evolution? Nothing! Alright, we can understand that (more or less), but the slipper animalcule has a more direct perception of life (as small children, too), because it is not locked inside a wall of words and thoughts. Democracy? Too complex! Freedom? The freedom to eat or to be eaten! Equality? The same thing everywhere! Brotherhood? Can slipper animalcule laugh?... The problem here: Slipper animalcules and amebae are too small to see directly, the same is to say about this virus. So they don't exist and at the same time they do, like these Q-bits (0 and 1 at the same time). But that would be your not understandable 1. truth again... So, after we have already discussed some arguments against a critic of Corona-regulations (conspiracy theorist, esoterist, lunatic) and only 1 argument is left: right-wing-radicalism. In my opinion nothing more than psychological projection of their own behavior. Do you know that in our anti-infection-law the word "Ermächtigung" (empowerment) is mentioned exactly 48 times? Strange enough...

silencedsilenced    Duminică, 31/05/2020 - 15:22

Yes, there is this thing about conformity, but I think it goes beyond that. Blindly trusting speeches is just the only way we have to access most of the facts around us, regardless of our desire to conform to others' opinions. Even if you could establish the truth by yourself, it would take you a dozen lifetimes just to scratch the surface of the absurd amount of knowledge gathered these last few centuries.

For instance, apparently, 50% or more of the French population thinks a nuclear plant is a massive carbon emitter. I'd rather get rid of the damned things myself, but not based on such a bullshit. As it appears, the general level of confidence in nuclear science and engineering is so low that the simple truth that nuclear plants, despite numerous other issues, are by far the most carbon efficient energy source known to man, gets lost in the hail of urban legends, pseudo-science and hysteria that surrounds the topic. Democracy will simply handle this issue like so many others, in a totally irrational and random way.

Everywhere I look rationality is brought forward to justify profoundly irrational choices. My conviction is that rational decisions are a myth, but unfortunately we painted ourselves in a corner where irrational decisions have consequences of the exterminating 50% of wildlife mass in 40 years kind.
What we need is a political system that would acknowledge the profound limitations of our collective intelligence and protect us from our infinite capacity to fool ourselves. That includes protecting some life-threatening truths, like for instance the real availability of energy, climate change, rarefaction of raw materials, collapse of ecosystems, inequalities and achievable standard of living...
Also a system of values that would allow to find fulfilment in self sacrifice and voluntary sobriety, instead of being labelled a dumb loser and kicked in the slats for it. In other words, thoughtcrime communist doubleplus bad.
Instead we just sit there like dumb sheep frantically grazing, trying not to think too hard of what will happen after the last blade of grass has been eaten.
Now is a good time to read or re-read "The sheep look up"...

You might want to read the book. It's a perfect example of the lucidity of the 70's following the publication of the "limits to growth" that was swept under the rug these last 40 years.
Or you can go for the reader's digest

"Death is only the beginning" -> Yep, and so go some gruesome monsters called "reanimators" in "Grim Dawn" Regular smile

Read about music throughout history
