A Pack of Cigarettes

Versiuni: #1#2#3#4#5#6#7
I am sitting to watch the sky of others’ through another man’s pane
And I cannot recognize any star that I know
I had traveled all the roads that had come my way
I looked back and couldn’t find any footprints though

But if your pocket holds a pack of cigarettes
That means nothing is that bad at least as far as today
If you have an air-ticket to a silver-winged jet
Which leaves nothing but a trace as it flies away

And no one wanted blame put on the grape wine* with ease
And no one was much willing to be made a cat’s paw
And no music- no fun to die hard at all
Without music I don’t want to even rest in peace

But if your pocket holds a pack of cigarettes
That means nothing is that bad at least as far as today
If you have an air-ticket to a silver-winged jet
Which leaves nothing but a trace as it flies away

Comentariile autorului:

*"On the grape wine" is a split-up idiom for "on the grapevine" just like in the original

Спасибо, Соня, on my last legs перед окончанием года еще пытаюсь что-то переводить. Спасибо за поддержку. Regular smile

Thank you, Alex. I hope you'll also enjoy US National Anthem. Works out amazingly well when sung to music. Regular smile

Well, Tsoi's lyrics would always stay too simple/or too hard to sing for me, even in Russian. I can't make a judgement there on "singability" of translaiton. I'm afraid Tsoi was the only one who could sing them properly, especially early ones. I appreciate your work on translation and idioms: a very interesting move with "vine" and a question on "cat's paw". Two translations use it instead of "chestnuts", any reason why? Chestnuts are at least closer to the fire/heat theme. It is rhyming consideration?

Well, there's a better way to perform the trick:
No one wanted to be blamed without the sauce (instead of the obvious "cause")
This fits perfectly preserving the meaning.

It's possible, but i kind of would separate wine (as alcoholic drink) from the rest of wood/drink theme.
Interesting, though. If you want to look for idioms, open up Tsoi's songbook =)

Guys, sorry, I didn't get notified that you'd left your comments. About the Chestnuts. I think the meaning is different "No one wanted to be used as pawns" rather than profiteer from the situation. As for "grape wine", I wanted to emphasize the idea of slander and rumours.
