His last letter*

Thinking of the passion that has already overwhelmed me,
no matter how many temptations one flees from,
today I went to the mirror and kissed my reflection1
that I turned into your face.2

The glass has lied to me in such a way
that I saw his lovely face displayed there
and fainted, remaining motionless;
believing your kiss to be my last.

And when reason astonished me
I thought with foolish delirium
that if the kisses of a shadow burn me,
then your kisses will kill me, my darling.

And a terrible reflection frightens me,
although I redden when I tell you
that at the thought of being happy on this earth
I broke the glass so I could search for your gaze.3

  • 1. lit. 'kissed myself'.
  • 2. pretended the reflection was hers, not his.
  • 3. Instead of looking into the mirror for a "false" reflection, he wants to see her real eyes face to face.

It was pretty vague at first but the song is originally written from a man's point of view to a woman (1880 - Juan de Dios Peza)
http://www.poesi.as/jdp310.htm

The song in the video is only a handful of stanzas from the original, and the women seem to switch that point of view in the video. But if we go with "his last letter", he's telling her he's ready to stop looking for her in mirrors and look for the real her wherever she may be.

Honestly, I'm glad you brought it up because it bothered me to leave it like that. I was just going to leave it as "The last letter" and leave it up to the reader to decide who wrote what :)
