Hallo,

meine Meinung:

"Will you marry me?"

Es gibt Varianten, zB, "Marry me" und "Will you be my wife?" doch "Will you marry me?" scheint das Üblichste zu sein, zumindest im Film.

Also, gibt's sowas auf Deutsch? Was sagen die Deutsche jemandem wenn sie den heiraten wollen?

Auf Deutsch sagt man das fast genauso, allerdings nicht mit "will", sondern mit "want", also "Willst du mich heiraten?" oder auch "Willst du meine Frau/mein Mann sein?"
Mit "Wirst" statt "Willst" klänge es sehr seltsam.

So, what is a Kommissar, exactly? What does a German usually picture when they hear that word? I thought it was some kind of police officer but now I'm not so sure. I'm also wondering what the English equivalent would be.

Radidadumm ohohoh...

http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kommissar

Germans usually think of a police officer when they hear "Kommissar" due to TV, but there are also Kommissare in other public offices, like customs, politic offices...

A Kommissar is superior to a Polizeihauptmeister but inferior to the Hauptkommissar, don't know how the ranks in the States would be...

Question:

"Zwischen Handtuch und ner Decke
Ja da muss auch noch ein Bierchen rein"

I'm wondering mostly about the "auch noch" part. Does that mean:

"A beer has to go between the towel and blanket as well" or
"Another beer has to go between the blanket as well"

Or is it ambiguous? If so, is one or the other more strongly implied by the wording alone?

well, in the first version, it means that the phrase implies that there is no beer in what he's putting in the first place (a bag). In the second version it's implied that there is already at least one beer.

as well means too in this context.

edit: I really should have written the second one like so: "Another beer has to go between the blanket and the towel." without the "as well"

Looking at this song (feel free to translate it if you are inclined, it's a request as of the time I'm making this post): https://lyricstranslate.com/en/request/schwerelos

What the heck is a Kalkador? Or maybe it's a mistranscription? I took a listen and it sounds like Kalkador to me too.

I listened to some other live version, and he sings "Karikatur":

But that's hardly the only line where I can't tell for sure what he sings.

non-native speaker here, but... just looking at it, I would assume it means, "coffee for two [please]." I guess it would help if you could further paraphrase the line or give an[other] example of the context it's used in. :)

"Kaffee zu zweit" roughly means "we are two, and we drink coffee together". Depends on the context, but could mean, "we two have a date at the café".

You can also say "zu dritt", "zu viert" etc. - the "zu x" just means how many people participate.

Hello,

Kinda wondering if my translation of "Führ' das Schwert mit dieser Schlacht" is
correct in this song: https://lyricstranslate.com/en/drachenreiter-dragonriders.html

I translated it as "Carry the sword in this battle"

Also, there's another line in one of their songs that's really confusing to me: https://lyricstranslate.com/en/w%C3%A4chter-der-nacht-guardian-night.html

"alles Grün vom Kleide reißt"

Ein Schwert Führen = to wield a sword

I don't have any suggestions for that second line though, sorry!

I guess my confusion comes from the preposition "mit" I'm not sure if it's part of the verb, or goes with the noun. In english, it would sound odd to say "Carry the sword with this battle." Maybe that's not the case in german though.

I couldn't listen to the song right now to hear if they are singing "mit" or "in" dieser Schlacht.

But if they sing "mit" the explanation would be that it's about a boy becoming a man and that from this battle on he will carry the sword (instead of something smaller and lighter)

I've corrected those two lyrics.
The booklet can easily be found on ecover.to

The line "Die alles Grün vom Kleide reißt" makes not much sense to me either, but the lyrics often contain strange wording.
Translation of it: "which rips off all the green from the clothes".

According to the booklet it's "in dieser Schlacht". It sounds like he sings "mit", but that is grammatically wrong.

Könnte das möglicherweise "I could never bear you to try an easy way" sein?
"Ich könnte das nie ertragen, dass du einen leichten Weg/eine leichte Art und Weise ausprobieren/versuchen würdest." Oder "I could never bear you to try and ease away"?

Ich glaub es heisst: "I could never bear you to try and ease away." "ease away" heisst "leave quietly, slowly, or inconspicuously."

Okay, hier bin verwirrt. Es gibt so ein Lied, das "Verdammt guter Tag" heisst.

Die erste Zeile geht so: Was fuer'n verdammt guter Tag."

Also, Ich habe meine Deklinationtabelle gecheckt und ich kann's nicht verstehen, wie das sein kann. Es muss "was fuer'n verdammt gutEN Tag" heissen....oder? Das Nomen muss Akkusativ mit "fuer" sein, stimmt? Aber kann es sein, dass die Saenger einfach falsch ausgesprochen haben? Ich glaube sie sind Deutscher.

I think the issue here is that "für" is not really used as a preposition in that sentence. "was für ein" is a grammaticalized phrase meaning "what a" - I don't know how it came to be that.
The case then is determined by the whole phrase. For example in "was für einen schönen Tag wir heute doch haben" ("what nice a day it is today"), it is accusative case since it's the direct object of "haben".

Thanks, that clears it up....that's confusing though. I know what it means but i would think whether it's really functioning as a preposition or not the normal preposition-case rules would apply.

Which means that the verb determines it:

So, I'm thinking about translating this song: https://lyricstranslate.com/en/weird-al-yankovic-trapped-drive-thru-lyri...

And a lot of lines in this song have this kind of construction in them:

'm like, "No, I said 'delivered.'"
She's like, "I heard you say 'liver!'"
I'm like, "I should know what I said..."
She's like, "Whatever, I just don't want any liver!"

"I'm like" in this context means exactly the same thing as "I said". It's a very colloquial, spoken way of saying that, usually when telling a story. I think that usually the person is enunciating what is being said to mimic the mood/tone of what was said when that form is used.

I was wondering if there is a German equivalent? I really don't think so, but I figured I'd ask. Maybe not so much a one-to-one literal equivalent, but a way of speaking in the past tense like that.

Yes, that would be "ich so". Your example would be translated as:

"Ich so: '...' und sie so: '...'"

If this is in a dialogue, you can also alternate between "so" and "dann" ("then") or "wieder" ("again"):

"Ich so: '...' und sie dann: '...' und ich wieder: '..."
