Well, I do NOT like this comment. Help person to understand the error of his/her way.
Pierre,
I got a similar comment to one of my translations into Russian from Maria. And while she was absolutely correct and almost each sentence was lacking, I did not know what was wrong and simply deleted the translation and cried for 2 hours. To tell you the truth, it took me a while to have another go at translating into my native language... If this is a young person, he may not have enough confidence after such biting remarks regardless whether about the original or translated version. I see plenty inane songs that deserve to be deleted [in my opinion] so I keep reminding myself that it was not me who submitted these and not me who should judge.
No reason for crying. As to me, I refuse to try translating into any other language than French (except for very short and simple pieces) because I know the result would be horrible, and many would translate much better than I. That's just a fact, I don't feel ashamed of it. In this very case, I would say that the original doesn't even deserve to be translated... but if other people want to try, I have no objection.
I was curious anyway, and I had never heard of that singer, so I watched the video on Youtube. Well, not only the text is poor, but so is also the melody, and even the voice... As to the singer, she is not really ugly, but that's all I can say in her favour. Let's not make her the offence of comparing her to Barbara for example...
Is it true that French do not like mireille mathieu? I was in Paris when Barbara died and someone told me that. I love mireille mathieu. I like Patricia Kaas. I do not get Barbara (must be the language barrier). Without knowing French, I visualized most songs MM sang - one would guess, inaccurately. Lol, her song Together We are Strong was our wedding song [to the complete dismay of the Russian and Italian sides, as well as the band that was severely arguing against playing the tape - bridezilla won...] I still argue her Caruso is the best rendition.
Mireille Mathieu was probably better loved in Russia than in France ! She's kind of a copy of Edith Piaf, only not so good. To me, she makes unnecessary effects when singing - and sings too loud. But well, "de gustibus et coloribus (or rather, cantricibus ?) non disputandum est".
It is embarrassing, but songs were not in French... My laptop does not have CD player... Glad I found these here and asked to be translated: Siempre Amor and Nostalgia. Searching for couple of others.
Also found MM is a Putin's supporter - good thing I can segregate music from politics. Although, I heard in Israel they changed programming not to play Wagner - what do you think? I am for keeping great music and denouncing racist, antisemitic, etc. views.
This is awful - mm songs are in my head but I can't recall names - heading to my CD library so I can ask you all what it is I like. Lol.
Indeed, sometimes it's difficult to tell, because beginners tend to use the same "algorithms" as machines - just going by words and lines. What's more they probably don't read the final result and don't notice that what they wrote doesn't make much sense as a whole text.
Pierre,
Could you do me a huge favor and look at the translation of Des mensonges en musique. I would like to know if it is accurate and good. Thanks in advance.
I reset the form of your lyrics to match the originals and to give you better organization. (Your first pitfall.)
Go through your English translation line by line and ask "Does it make sense to you?" If it does not...that is the first indication it is mistranslated.
Go through each couplet/stanza. See if it represents a coherent thought. (That means grammar too). If not, it's time to reinterpret the French. Don't use English words just because they have French counterparts. (The nuances off their meanings may not be the same.)
Read all the lyrics. Get the idea of the artist's intentions, their vocabulary, the tenses. The purpose of their words.
Don't let using Google Translate out rule your brain. I see it in this translation.
*Of any language...study, study, study. Use your resources, written, spoken, old, new. The potential is there. Make it happen.

Looks like machine translation, don't you think Pierre?
